I was going to send this as a response to a PM from cold front, but then I ended up writing a novel, so I thought I’d share it with all you fresh meat.

Great post Wildcat! 👍

We (Class of 2010) certainly need to listen to upper class students’ stories and learn from their experiences.

One question though, and I am not sure others know this, does the school offer free dental work to dental students. A faculty member briefly mentioned something along the lines of free dental work (I think orthodontics too) for students during an Excel session, but I didn't get the chance to ask her more information. Can you comment on this? Enquiring minds want to know. 😀

Thanks!

It’s pretty cool that we have a five page post here at SDN and some of us haven’t even stepped in the door yet! Looking forward to getting to know a new bunch of cronies. I’ll be flying in on the 21st and hitting the streets after that! Kind of excited/stressed about the 3,000 mile move but Boston seems like a good place to be living. See you all soon.

Ok, how about LIR- here is the address:

Lir
903 Boylston St
Boston, MA 02115-3104
(617) 778-0089
Cross Street: Hereford Street

It seems like it is more laid back, and not so noisy in which we can hear each other. Let me know if its cool with you guys. Also, let me know if anyone needs a ride, give me a ring- 832-259-4006.

Whiskeys...Monday nights...10 cent chicken wings. Dont miss out.

Just had em wings - didn't expect them to be so big, juicy, and well cooked for... 10 cents! Rezdawg, if you got dining tips for every day of the week, let's hear em please 😀

As for Lir, I think it'll be a good place to meet up from the bad reviews it got on CitySearch!

For those that want to know...its steps away from where Whiskey's is...they are very close to each other. It should be easy to find if you know where Whiskeys is. Have fun.

Another one for the Excel diary....

We went to the World Cup final outdoor screening last Sunday, Boston City Hall Plaza! We were rooting for I-T-A-L-I-A baby! 😀

The domain is something from long ago -- and when someone comes up with a good one to represent the class, I'll change it later + redirect.

Wow dude...you guys can get some good use out of that if your classmates participate. Good work.

For the forum, I clicked too fast during the setup, and missed checking off a couple things that prevented everyone from registering (other than myself). So if you tried before and gave an error - try again please, it should work now.

just to confirm things... we're meeting at Lir on the 29th at 8pm?

I've been in Boston for almost a week now.....a little bored to be quite honest

but I willl definitely come out on the 29th!!

I'm in for sure. See you guys on Saturday night. 👍

i'll be moving in on the 29th... so i'll try to make it too 🙂

I wanted to pose an important question: how is everyone going about to find a place to live? I've heard from many people that it is a waste of time to live outside of South End (has anyone has heard the same thing), but it is hard to find availibility within south end. Are there any people out there subletting a place for a month or two before signing a year lease? I'm just confused about how to approach this situation... any suggestions would help? I'm leaving for boston this sunday and I still have to no place to stay :scared:

Load up the PDF, start calling/emailing. Craigslist is also very helpful.

I just got accepted into the class of 2010. And I am making the move this Friday. I don't really know where to look for housing but I am going to check that link out and then Craigslist for sure.

Any other suggestions. And how much will it be for a months rent.

I'll be living with 2 other roommates lives right across from Liquor Land. Total rent is 1600, we're splitting it 3 ways (weighted via room size, so I'm paying $550). You should look for housing as close to school as possible.

Anywhere on the BU Shuttle route is also very good. Lastly, if none of the above works (next to school, or next to BU Shuttle route), then you at least need to get a place close to a T Station. Just remember that school is going to be the Mass Ave Stop on the Orange Line. So if you're 15 stops away and need to hop on 3 different trains, the transit is going to take a LONG time.

Just got here from LA on Sunday, found an apt (with much searching) and in the process of furnishing. So busy yet so bored! Hope to see you guys on the 29th! (if I'm not buying/moving stuff for the apt)

Hope you can make it out on the 29th xerostar! The more the merrier 🙂

how are we supposed to know who we're supposed to be meeting?

will someone be there first to get a table for "BU"?

Ok, so I talked to the lady at LIR, and she said she is going to reserve a space for us in the back of the bar. Just look for the signs that say BU Dental. I will also be there at 7:30-7:45 and if anyone gets lost- feel free to call me at 832-259-4006, see ya'll tonight.

Make sure you get your gym membership this weekend. Apparently not all students can get membership at South Block - it's not that big of a gym.

I have a quesiton for all of the students (including older).... What do you think about the electronic books? what are you guys going to pick? I'm still debating whether or not to give up the hard bound books.

Ah the dreaded question, "Should I get the DVD or should I get the textbook?" I remember this being a real hot topic during my orientation. Here are my thoughts, obviously your studying skills are up to speed that you got into dental school. I am assuming for studying you used textbooks. Why would you want to change your habits now, when it has worked for you in the past. It is not easy to sit in front of a screen and study for an hour or so as it is with a textbook with you are used to by now. It is about familiarity, at least it was for me.
That being said your grades will not be affected greatly if you choose one or the other. It is a matter of time management and taking the time to study either off a dvd or a book. IF you feel comfortable using the dvd and studying off a computer screen, go DVD! IF you prefer having a printed copy in front of you, go textbook! In the end, you got loaded with PowerPoint slides, professor handouts, and class notes, that the textbook and dvd is used very little and often only to reference something. If you are curious, I went textbook and looking back dvd would have been fine if not better.
Don't stress the decision, but remember a dvd is always easier to carry than several books!

Any of you going to Paddy O's tomorrow night? I'll be there...hope to see some of you there.
