Hi all current, former, and will be GMS students at BU Med. I hope you all are doing well. By looking at my username you should all know who I am. I am starting this thread to contact any GMSers out there on SDN. I know that BU med hasn't accepted too many of us yet (currently 9 from last year and 2 from this year). My hope is that they will take more of us off the WL. Congrats to all that have gotten in to a school (MD or DO). Keep the Faith.🙂

I know LT hit the jackpot. I got one offer from MSU, am very close to the top of the waitlist at EVMS, and am somewhere in the top 1/3 at UCI. I've withdrawn from all of my others (8 interviews). Where's everyone else gotten in? People should know who I am from my sn also, but I'm not remembering GoBuffs. Help me out!

Buffs stands for Colorado Buffalos. Does that help? Anyway I'm not so luck. I'm currently on 3 WL including BU and still waiting to hear from AMC. Please give me a little hint as to who you are. I thought I knew all the Cali people.

your fame has spread all the way to distant shores. all it takes is to storm into someone's office and tell him how it is! Let's see... how you would know who I am... you had me over for thanksgiving dinner... i got like 8 sticks in physio from ali... i guess i really didn't do too much memorable stuff there. Let me know if you still need more info. Well I hope you don't get too bummed. A lot of the people around here are telling me how much waitlists are moving. In fact, 1 person just got his first acceptance today, but he didn't go to BU with us. For what it's worth, I think you're a great guy and will be a great doctor. I haven't met many people with as genuine a heart as you... so take heart, your time will come.

Daaaaaaaaaa!

I know who you are domagnet. Congrats on being accepted to MSU. You are one of the most honest and good-hearted people I have every met. You deserve everything that is coming to you. Many people have gotten in to MD and DO schools but I don't want to list their names.

That's really nice of you to say, Buffs. I'm eagerly waiting for your acceptance, so you'll have to send me a line when you get it. POB will probably get a call from me in a couple weeks to see if they've compiled a list of all the GMSers who've been accepted somewhere. For now, I've gotta get this thesis done!

I just got accepted to EVMS, so I'll be dropping MSU.

Congrats domagnet. I hope also that you get into UCI. I assume that is your top choice. Sounds like if you are in the top 1/3 that it is just matter of when, not if.

Hi domagnet,
Just got the call from Dean Witzburg. I am in at BU med. Finally, after all that waiting; I'm going to be a physician.

Hey Congrats GoBuffs on your acceptance! It looks like I'll be heading to BU next year for the MS in MedSci. I've considered Gtown, EVMS, Drexel, and Finch, and I think BU is my best bet. Any thoughts/advice on what it takes to succeed at BU? Would you recommend living close to campus? Is there volunteer opportunities? Is it a really cut throat environment? Also, do most students get in to med school right after the program, or is there a lag year generally? Thanks for any thoughts you might have and remember to kick back and enjoy your summer! -Dave

TexasGuy, I was curious to know what you may have heard of the EVMS program. Any pros/cons? I applied to it, but they are waiting on my april mcat scores.

Woooooohoooooo!!!!!!! It's about stinkin' time they pulled their heads out. A lot of our friends got accepted this last week, so I'm stoked! Congrats on your acceptance G. I always knew you'd be a great doctor. Now you just have to get through 4 years of the cafeteria.

I was in BUSM GMS 2001-02, I thought I had blown it since I only managed to get waitlisted at BU and flat out rejected pre interview from the other 7 schools, I felt a acceptance was not forthcoming from BU this cycle so I took all my cash and split to Hawaii for a while, but as luck would have it I got the call on Friday while drunk on the beach.
Life is once again good; best of luck to fellow GMS student, see you at the white coat ceremony.

Hey bivwack-

Congrats on your acceptance. How would we know you? Give us a clue, we were in your class too.

Hey whats up all BU GMS folks,

Go Buffs - thanks for the advice about the program, I appreciate it.

For the rest of you - would you all recommend applying to a wide range of schools while you are in the program? And should I take the initiative in informing the schools I applied to about the BU program, by sending them transcripts, update letters etc. I'd love to try to avoid the lag year - as this is my 3rd time applying to med school and I want to get started.

Would you recommend volunteering at the hospital? Is this even feasible with the time commitment of the program?

I plan on basically being a complete hermit for 11 months in order to get myself into med school - and I want to be able to hit the ground running so I won't have any distractions. Thanks for any advice people might have! -dave

TX, here're my two cents. If you're good enough to apply to med school while you're in the program, save your money and don't go to BU. If the program is going to be the thing that helps you get in, apply after you get some grades in... and yes, apply to a wide range of schools. Don't be rediculous about it though, twenty something schools is plenty. When you apply, make sure the other schools know you're in the program... it's a lot of money- so milk it for everything it's worth. If you don't have any hospital experience, yep spend some time in the med center. If you already do, just study... you need to nail this program. Good luck to you.

Thanks for the advice. Hopefully I can bang out most of my secondaries before classes start. What would you guys say the avg profile is for a student at BU in terms of MCAT and GPA?

Good Luck at BU TXGuy! I hope good things come your way! 🙂

I second domagnet's reply. Most of the people who have gotten in while doing the program without a lag year would have gotten in anyway; if they just applied again and worked as a lab tech for a year. Definitely apply to multiple schools and 20 is a good number. As far as volunteering, there is a outreach van project which you can sign up for, but remember, get the grades first. If you are applying while in the program definitely update your grades with all the schools. They may put you on a WL and see how you did in the program the first semester.

i got into the boston program and really want to know what the chances are for students in the program to get in the following year to medical school. for those of you have been through the program..is there a certatin gpa you need to maintain like finch. or does it really depend on how many spots that are available. if anyone can shed some light on the situation that would be great.

domagnet,

you probably dont know me I kept pretty much to myself while at school, didnt attend lectures much and never attended lab, but if it helps i am the a short stocky(5'7'' 230 lbs) male who always sat in the rear of the the lecture hall to the right as you walk in, and was usualy the first to hand in tests. If you still got the the sheet w/ everyones photo and name, take a look at my e-mail address that should help out.

I know who you are. Congrats on getting into BU. Are you going there for sure or still waiting on a better offer? You are one amazing dude for finishing so early. Everytime I am still half way through my test and you are walking up to hand your test in; I just smile with shock and awe. My friend and I were talking about who is the strongest dude in the GMS class. He picked Big E (the guy that played some Pro ball), but I picked you. You look like a powerlifter to me. Just curious, what's your total?

no doubt about it, I will be attending BU. I just got to get off this rock and back to the main land and find a place in boston. I am not sure what you mean by total, but in my heyday of heavy lifting my combined max deadlift, bench and squat would be somewhere around 1400, but i have slimmed down some since that time.

ok so no one really answered my question. anyone out there who went through the program, could you tell me what are the chances to get into the med school the year after the program. what stats do you need. peace

I think domagnet and I did answer your question about a few posts ago. Basically, "if you can get into med school while doing the program; you never needed it in the first place" (to quote POB, a top GMS administrator who's on the med school's admissions committee). Meaning that your GPA must have been fine (~3.6).

Some people do the program because their MCAT was low. Taking the GMS classes will definitely help you with some MCAT questions, but there is a lot cheaper ways to improve you MCAT score.

To give you a better idea, I believe about 3 or 4 people got into med school right after doing 2 semesters of the program including summer. I have no idea what their GPA's were, but it probably was not low like my (sub3.0).

With that being said, I have no idea what your profile is and getting into med school is somewhat of like playing Craps. So if you want to take a chance and apply, it can't hurt anything. I hope that helps.

Hey GoBuffs or anyone else,

Does anyone have any luck at getting in to other schools when they are in the program? It seems like Gtown and Drexel get a ton of people into schools during the year they are in grad school, I was wondering why BU is different. Is it just that you need to stay on top of it and send out continual updates to the schools you've applied to?

Congratulations to all GMSers who have acceptances and good luck to those who are still waiting. I got the call from Dean Witzburg on June 12th so I guess I will see you guys in the fall. I am very happy that BU starts in September so at least we get a good summer.
I feel that for me the GMS program made a huge difference and was definitely worth it. I attended in 2001-2002 and I think I recignize the GMS people here. I ended up with 4 admissions - Penn State, Drexel, Albany and BU and I do not think I would have gotten any without this program. I would definitely recommend it to people who feel that their undergrad academic record is not competitive.

Congrats Bowlofcherries!
Please give us some hints to your identity. Are you done with your thesis? I am unfortunately still finishing my. But I hope I'll be done with it soon, so that I can enjoy my summer.🙂

Hmmm... let me see.. hints... I am the nutty foreign girl who was always ruching off to one of my 2 jobs after classes and I think we interviewed at BU on the same day - January 10th?

I know who you are now. I guess I should have also looked up the other BU thread. Well it looks like all three of us got in from that day. 😎 Are you still waiting for any other school to come through?

All 3 of us got in at BU? I hope so!!! I would love to see both of you guys in the fall! I cannot wait to find out how many other GMS will be going to school with us.
I am still wait-listed at Tufts, but I will take my name off of the list there, BU really is my first choice. How about you - are you waiting on other schools?
Oh and one more thing - I guess one does get in even with a B in physiology, contrary to what POB would have you believe!!! He had told me that I would not make it unless I took a make-up. I told him I would take my chances anyways

I think with you added to the list of people accepted from the GMS program; we have about 14 that I know of, but I think there are plenty of acceptances that were given out in June. I am still waiting on Colorado, my state school. It is much cheaper than BU and it is also a good school. One thing I've learned in this whole process is that there is no guarantees or absolutes when it comes to applying for med school. You should goin to his office and let him know you got in. He would be very happy for you. I am sure he was looking out for you best interest when he said it. I hope you are going to take a nice long vacation before school starts.😎

This is great! I am delighted to find out that so many of my classmates got in! I hope you get what you want although BU is a wonderful school and it would be great to have you in my class. I still cannot believe it, tomorrow will be 2 weeks since the call and I am still deliriously happy. Otherwise it would have been Albany for me... and I was not lookign forward to moving there, and it is more expensive than BU even. As far as POB is concerned I would rather keep my distance, let's just say I am not convinced that he is looking out for my best interests... I got in thanks to my good relationship with my inerviewers and with Dean Witzburg. Having been wait-listed last year, I have been comminicating with him via e-mail for almost a year now. POB had told me that even though he was convinced that I belonged in Med school, he would personally object to my acceptance at BU because of my B in Physiology... and strongly suggested that I take a make-up this year. I am glad I did not go through all the trouble and believed in the strengths of my aplication. I am sorry, I feel strongly about this.
