BU Housing!!

Hello Guys,

I have been accepted into Boston University for 2005.Any suggestions regarding housing will be great full. My preferences are-

1.Live at a distance of 5-10 min from the school campus.
2.Looking for a single bedroom apartment/studio.
3.Good and safe neighborhood.

This is going to be a big move for me and have never been or lived in Bu before, except for my interview for a day. So it would be really helpful if you can give me any input regarding the closest neighborhood, T-stations, grocery etc etc.

Hello snoopdog- I went to BU for the GMS program at the medical campus. I was also new to Boston and was looking for a 1-bedroom apartment. I ended up living in the Parkside apartments at 91 Westland Avenue run by Forest Properties. It was a very nice place in close proximity to everything. When you say 5-10 minutes from campus, I'm not sure whether you mean walking, by public transportation, or by bike or some other means. I was about a 10-15 minute bike ride, a 15-20 minute bus ride, and about a 20 minute walk or so. It was also very close to the Prudential Center, Fenway Park, several T-stops (Green & Orange lines). As far as cost, it was $1625/month. A tad costly, but well worth it I suppose. When I looked for apartments I only had a limited time frame, so I basically took what was available. That is really sweet of you.And the information that you have shared is pretty useful. And 5-10 min that i mentioned was by walk. So when did you start looking out for your appartments ?is it going to be any better if I start the hunt immediately? Let me do some more search on the given facts and will get back to you if i need more help.

Im in the same position. Chances are that I will be at BU in the fall. Looking for the same kind of thing...about a 10 min. walk would be nice.

Also, I prefer an apartment complex with lots of single ladies.

I'm a BU dental grad so I'll try and help out.

Anything within a 10-15 walk of school will be in the South End, where the med center is. It's an area that has been "resurrected" the past 10 years. It used to be very rundown and pretty dangerous but like in most other cities with high rent, people started moving there because of cheap rent. It's picked up ALOT but it's still not very liveable IMO. There are still many fishy characters hanging around and if you're a girl then I'm sure your parents won't like you living there. If you really want to walk to school then go north of Washington Street, it'll be 15-20 minute walk which might be tough in winter.

Lots of classmates did live around the med center and seemed to like it, even though they had to go to Back Bay to get to a grocery store. Personally, I lived in Coolidge Corner in Brookline. It was ~30-35 minutes by T and bus but was well worth it to get away from school environment and live in a nice area. BU does own really nice apts near the St. Mary's T stop which is ~20-30 minutes from the med center. Good area, very central, close to Back Bay and Coolidge Corner. A classmate friend lived in one of those. You have to ask early b/c they fill up quickly.

i was wondering which place to look for? i'm searching for a place where most young people and students live, near to night clubs, good night life and so...
some dental studens say that Cambrige and Aliston are good places... what do you guys think?
probably i will not have any free time to hangin around, but if i have, why not all that "social places" be near me?

Cambridge would be fine. Central Square is kind of shifty but Harvard Square is a busy area with lots to do. The commute might be tricky. Allston/Brighton is basically the maincampus BU ghetto. LOTS of students. I'd advise against it, though, because you'd need to take the B line to Hynes T stop which is a serious pain in the butt. It'll bring your commute up to 1 hour. The C line and D line are much quicker than the B.

If you want to be able to walk to restaurants, bars, stores, see people walking around the best bets are Fenway, Back Bay (down to Washington St), Coolidge Corner, Harvard Square.

A car is a decent idea. There is limited street parking near school so you will have to go in early to get a spot where you don't need to feed a meter all day. If you can afford it, I believe that the med center has one or two new parking structures but I assume that they're expensive ($200/month??).

Driving and parking around the city is b!tch. Depending on where you live, you probably won't want to use the car aside from driving to/from school. It's also not very easy to get a parking spot with your apartment ESPECIALLY if it's in any of the places I mentioned. It took me 2 years to get one at my place and then it cost $150/month. I did not use it to drive to school because of the parking situation.

Anyone know what the price range for a decent 1 bedroom apt in boston would be, which is about a 5-10 minute walk from the dental school?

I will probably bring my car too, but i dont plan to drive to the school. I just need the car to use to drive home sometimes and around city when not in school. So what would be a good neighborhood where i can park my car on the streets without any hassles ?

The closest T-stop is the Orange Line Mass Ave station. The walk down to the dental school is probably about 15 minutes or so. The #1 and CT1 buses both run from there as well, but it'll probably take you just as long to walk as it would to wait for a bus. A lot of times the bus will probably take longer than just walking. It's not a bad walk really.
