I will be attending dental school in August at Boston University and I am currently looking into housing options. I live in Canada and I have never been to Boston before so I am completely unfamiliar with the area. I was wondering if there are any 2nd, 3rd or 4th year BU dental students that could provide me with some information regarding the best places to live in first year??
I already filled out an app for Harrison Court but I believe its already full. Are there any other on-campus options? or is off-campus the way to go??

thanks

I live in a suburb right outside of Boston, but know the city pretty well. First of all, BU dental school is located in the BU Medical Center, which is for a lack of better words, in a "not-so-good" part of town. In Boston there is a very fine line, literally, between the really poor area ( ie. homeless people) and rich area (million(s) dollar condos). Everything in Boston is accessible by T (the train system) followed by a few paces by foot. Avoid buses if you can. I would advice not living too close to BUMC, because it is on that fine line. You can pretty much live anywhere in Boston and it will take less than 30 min. to get to BUMC. Some places near Boston University main campus are good and not far from BUMC, and that way you can go use their gym or other facilities and not be far from home. Also, Longwood is the place most of the Boston Hospitals are (exept Tufts, BU and MGH). It is really medically oriented, and there is a lot of nice housing around there. The closer your home is to a T stop, the better. There are "bad" neighborhoods, but even in the "bad" neighborhoods there are nice areas. Good luck. Hope this helped.

has some good info on boston areas. the area near the school, South End is getting better, so the pockets right next to the school are pretty good for cheaper and close to campus living.

another great area is Back Bay, though it's a little more expensive.

good luck. feel free to pm me, I went to a grad school at BU Medical School, which is right next to the Dental School.
