Thought I would start a thread for everyone applying to BU MAMS for fall 2007 admission. Let's update each other on our status and how our application is progressing!

My application will be complete sometime next week and as soon as I hear something I'll let you guys know!

Perhaps, we will all be classmates soon!

Hello!

Mine is going in this weekend. Keep me posted!

Good luck!!!

Mine was complete yesterday. Michelle Hall said reviews don't start untill february. I am just keeping my fingers crossed!

You all might want to cool your jets a bit. The earliest acceptances probably won't be emailed until March. Just get everything in, relax, and wait.

can you use interfolio to send your letters of recs?

I'm applying, but nowhere close to complete. How many LOR's are you guys sending in?

I was wondering the same thing.

I want to send in my PAC (pre-med advisory comittee) from this years' MD application cycle. Can I do that? And if so, how do I indicate it on the application form?

Thanks and good luck!

I sent three LOR's from my med school recommendation.

Is anyone else that's applying a non-trad? The LOR sheets they gave us to have filled out have almost an academic-only quality to them - "would you allow this student to pursue a PhD under you?" is not something I really feel is best answered by a co-worker with only a BS. Are you guys sending any LOR's from work? I figured that'd be the 2nd most important one.

I didn't use the recommend forms when I applied last year. I just had professors send the letters written for medical schools and my supervisor write her own letter of recommend. The forms, from my understanding last year, were optional.
Good luck.

Thanks for the response. I'll email around other schools & post what I find - hopefully we don't have to use their stupid forms. Asking a co-worker from finance if he'd accept me in his PhD program doesn't seem very relevant . . .

Do you guys use a service like interfolio? Between this & possible med school apps later in the year, it seems like it only makes sense.

Is there a minimum MCAT to apply? Mine is really crappy. And also, is there a minimum g.p.a.?

I'll sending mine in on Friday and using interfolio as well.

I am keeping my fingers crossed for we early applicants!:luck:

hey guys. I just went by the admissions office today to drop off my application. The woman that I spoke with said that they are going to begin reviewing the applications next week.

This is what I found from their website!!

Eligibility for admission

To have a baccalaureate degree, and to have completed the following courses: General Chemistry, Organic Chemistry, Biology, and Physics all with lab. It is strongly suggested that additional Biology courses be completed prior to beginning the program. The majority of students accepted have a cumulative and science GPA of 3.0 or higher. However, students with lower GPA's may be accepted if their record shows marked improvement in the upper division years of their undergraduate career
to submit the results of the Medical College Admissions Test (MCAT) or the Graduate Record Examination. Generally it is expected that students will have MCAT scores above 25, however, exceptions may be made as many students retake the MCAT exam at the conclusion of the program. GRE scores in the 70 percentile or higher are expected.

Thanks tibzgurl !

about your letters, just add the grad school like you would any other school. I will be uploading my application and letters this weekend. I already sent out transcript requests, so I'll be pretty set soon. :luck:

Hey guys...is anyone going to attend the BU SMS open house this saturday??

I didn't know there was going to be an open house. Do you have a link to the information that you could post?

I will definitely attend!

Thanks!

I just sent in my app. Do we have to release MCAT scores, like the Georgetown SMP?

you have to print off and mail in an official copy from the AAMC website.

Hi guys...I'm having a hard time finding a science LOR...or it might take longer than expected. Any advice?

Hey Shewholives, I would say just based on the scope of the program to wait it out for a science reference a bit longer. But, you know.. you can contact Dr. Selwyn Broitman who is the co-chair of the program if your looking for absolute peace of mind. He is very personable and took the time to answer some of my specific questions. Good luck!

Do our recommenders have to fill out that form, or can we us ethe letters from interfolio?

From what I have heard (I talked directly to someone in the admissions office) you can use letters that have been written for medical school but they want them to be mailed (snail mail) with a signature across the seal. They also want the letters to come directly from the school/writer of the recommendations.

Hope this helps...

I went to the Open House on Saturday and I will be posting the happenings in a few minutes.

Hey all,

I went to the open house on Saturday and for all of you who could not make it I just wanted to give a quick (ok, maybe not so quick) overview/summary of what happened:

- there are about 500-600 applicants for approx. 180 seats in the program
- most of the classes are taken along side medical school students
- while the MD students are graded on a P/F system, MAMS students are given a letter grade
- according to the current students I talked to the program is VERY INTENSE (I was told it was the most horrible/miserable year of their life but also the most rewarding)
- BU med. has had approx. 30 students in its MD class from the MAMS program. It has held steady at about 30 students the past couple of years. BU interviews about 80 MAMS students each year
- If you decide to matriculate into BU med you do not have to retake the courses you took in MAMS program and can either sit in on them but not take the tests (in preparation for STEP1) or take other electives. You cannot skip a year of med school
- If you get a GPA of 3.5 or better in the program you WILL go to medical school (the director told us this)
- The students emphasized that the advisors really go to bat for you and help you every step of the way
- you are required to do a thesis... the thesis can be lab or library based. The lab thesis is graded on a A-F scale while the library thesis is graded P/F. Therefore if you are in the program to boost you GPA the lab thesis is probably the way to go. However, the split is approx. 50/50 lab/library
- the program can be completed in 1 calendar year however if you want to do a lab thesis plan on it taking up to 2 years.
- if you want to apply to medical school for 2008 matriculation only about 5% of the students will get in, the number jumps to approx. 65% if you wait to apply for 2009 matriculation and then another 15% for 2010 matriculation
- the cost of the program is approx. $50,000 (yikes, I know!) which includes tuition, books, fees, room and board (Boston is extremly expensive to live in) and various personal expenses. There are no scholarships for this program so the money is going to come from either the government or private funds.
- the students also emphasized that the program is not competitive among students in the MAMS program. Since there is no set scale for any of the tests is 10 people receive an A on the test all 10 will get A's (which I find great!)
- they also emphasized finding a study partner/group and to find them fast. The program is fast and furious and having a partner/group to study with is ideal. Even if you like to study alone they emphasized working in small groups.

I think that is it. If you have any other questions feel free to contact me. I am sure I am forgetting something.

Personally I was very impressed with the program, the directors and the current students. They were all really honest and up front about the rigors of the program. They all basically stressed that you have to be ready to work your butt off and then work some more. One student was talking about studying upwards of 14 hours a day in addition to classes. However, they also stressed that it can be done and if you want a career in medicine and other methods aren't working this may be the route for you.

I was leaning towards the Tufts program but after going to this open house I really want to attend the BU MAMS program!

Anyway, I hope this was helpful. Good luck everyone!:luck:

P.S. I submitted my application this morning so I will keep you posted if I hear someting. They said admissions was rolling so I can hear pretty soon (hopefully).:p

Hey DC thanks for all the great info...did they mention why such a low acceptance rate (5%) into medschool the first year?

Also, Don't forget to mail them a print-out of your MCAT scores! Good Luck! :luck:

List below all courses in your intended area of study that have been or will be completed before enrollment. Then list all foreign language courses you have taken or are taking. Mark graduate-level courses with a "G" after the grade. Any graduate-level courses for which you anticipate requesting transfer of credit should be marked with an asterisk (*).

does that mean courses you want credit for during the program (to exempt you from certain classes?) should i include undergraduate equivalents?

...why don't i understand this section?

where do i find a list of "courses in your intended area of study"

I just listed the courses that I would be taking for the spring of '07 (not sure about summer since the course list isn't available yet) along with the courses I have already taken post-graduation. I don't know if you will get graduate credit for any graduate courses you are taking now since the point of the program is to take the med-school courses, but it will atleast show them how you will fare in graduate level work...which is also important for the program. Just to give you a point of reference...the classes that I listed and am taking now are undergraduate classes. Hope this helps!

thanks. i called the ad office and they said to leave it blank. the courses will show up on my transcript.

THANK YOU SO MUCH DCWILDCAT!! UR INFO IS VERY HELPFUL!

So, the low acceptance rate the 1st year is because most of the students who are in the program are there because of some sort of deficit in the MD application, most likely low GPA. Because your first semester grades won't come in until Jan of 2008 the med schools won't really have much to go on. Even if you do really well and get the interview it is still kinda late and you may just be interviewing for a waitlist spot.

It would be ideal to have all your new grades in before you apply to med school (i.e. take the MAMS program 2007-2008 and apply ASAP in June of 2008, get all your secondaries in ASAP and then interview early for a spot for 2009). That is why the acceptance rate jumps if you wait.

Hope this helps!

Does anyone know if you are suppose to receive a postcard from BU once your application is deemed "complete"?? has anyone gotten one??

just received an email from Michelle Hall stating my app was complete for review and that i would be notified of an admissions decision by mail. my app was initally submitted on jan 26th so it is taking a good 2-3 weeks to finalize everything.

anyone received an admissions decision yet? if so, how long did it take from the time your app was complete?

cool...I dropped off my app feb. 2. So hopefully I'll hear something soon.

spoke too soon....just got the same e-mail. FINGERS CROSSED!!!

So I recieved the complete email on 3/2

Is it me or is this thread just not moving?

So did interfolio work for you guys? I plan on using that to send in my recs. Also, how many of you will be applying concurrently with the program?

i think this thread has died because no one is getting acceptances yet. as soon as those start coming out i expect a lot of chatter. i hope i'm amongst it...BU is my first choice.

Interfolio Worked For Me.

Does Anyone Know When They Begin Looking At Applications?

BE MORE SPECIFIC. CONCURRENTLY WITH WHAT ELSE?

The woman that I spoke with at the admissions office said that they were going to start reviewing applications the second week of Feb.

The women I talked to last thursday said that they haven't even started looking at them yet. She said this time of the year is early since they go into the summer with these apps.
