I really want to get into the BU program but have not taken the MCATS yet.
I will take them in august. Will this be an essential component of my application? What can I do about this?

I haven't taken the GRE either.

I believe you need either the GRE or the MCAT to apply to the program (perhaps BU accepts other professional exams such as the DAT, PCAT, OAT, etc., I'm not sure). The GRE is offered year-round, multiple times per month.

Since you're not taking the MCAT till August, I don't think you can get a complete app to BU on time unless you take the GRE. The August MCAT results won't come out till mid-October.

Just a few questions for those who have gone through the BU application process:

What kind of turnaround time should be expected for the BU MAMS program application?

Do you know if they provide you with a 'notice of complete application' like GU apparently does?

I hear class size is getting larger, what is the size of this past year's class?

Thanks in advance guys! Playing the waiting game is tough!

[ps: first time post, but long time lurker]

1. I applied mid-April 2002 and received my acceptance letter at the end of May. I don't know if this is a quick turnaround or not for the BU program (I never bothered to ask my GMS friends how quickly they heard back).

2. No, you need to follow up on your application and make sure they have all they need.

3. My class (entering Sept 2002) had about 100 students. The classes after me had close to 150. It seems as if admissions standard MIGHT be dropping somewhat. But don't take this to mean that if you get into the program you're set. You need to work your butt off if you want to get into medical school (including earning a decent MCAT score).

The turnaround time for BU tends to vary, depending on the volume of applications they have at that time. When I mailed my application in at the end of July, they called me two days after they'd received the application to tell me I'd been admitted. My best guess is that now through June will be the busiest time for BU since this is when current med school applicants are getting an idea of whether they will/won't be going to med school in the fall (and if they won't, will be sending their apps in to SMP's). So turnaround times are likely longer.

The MCAT's definitely are not required. As Phil A mentioned above - the GRE is sufficient. You could call and ask if they''ll make an exception for you. Asking can never hurt. Worst case, they stick by their standardized test requirement, and you're in the same place you are now.

My class was size 150 (I was in the class after Fusion's). This year's is even larger, but based on conversations I've had with some people running the program, they're thinking of downsizing it again. Whether this will actually happen is a different story.

I'm not sure of their general trend, but I applied this year in mid-January and didn't hear until just today.

Unfortunately, they keep you pretty much in the dark. You'll get an automated response when you complete the online application, but as far as learning when they received your supplemental packet, you'll just have to ask. I did, and their staff was very helpful and responsive.

Good luck!
David

I applied Feb 2 and received my admissions packet on March 18.

That's not too shabby. 😀
