I just got accepted into BU and don't know too much about the city. Does anyone have any suggestions about the best places to live for dental students? Not too pricey! Thanks.

Boston is an extremely pricey city but you get used to it. There used to be some lower rent somewhat ghetto area a couple blocks away but those are now extremely high end gay area with ridiculously-priced restaurants. Some students with car stays in Malden, Quincy, Dorchester area.

yeesh... the south end is a beautiful place to live, although yes it's expensive. and it's not as "gay" as it used to be, and even if it were, there's nothing wrong with that.

if you were to live in boston within walking/biking distance of the school, the norm for rent ranges from $800-something to $1200. in brookline, a really nice suburb just at boston's border (i mean, really close) you can find places for as low as in the $600s, although they have their $800s and up, too - the only gripe with that is that you'd have to take the T (their subway) and a bus to get to class, or you could still even bike. allston and brighton are also outside parts of boston that they're still considered the "city," but they're pretty dirty and it would take a bit longer to get to campus - you could always take BU undergrad's free shuttle. rent comes cheaper though.

having a car in boston is a huge b**ch - the cost of renting a parking space is in the 100-200s per month, and then parking at a meter will only give you 15 minutes for every 25 cents, and trust me, those meter maids do their jobs a little too well.

I agree there's nothing wrong with the gay area but it's helpful to point out the area anyhow.

Keep in mind $800-$1200 will probably get you an old tiny studio. Brookline, Allston, Brighton is not an option because train and bus connection takes way too long with way too many stops. Biking is cute but not a practical option because streets and traffics are bad even without the snow piling in the cold winter; plus Bostonian drivers are famous for being among the worst in the country. The most convenient would be near campus(expensive), Back Bay(expensive), Copley(expensive), Symphony(expensive), Chinatown(expensive), Kenmore(expensive), and anywhere else along Mass Ave. toward Harvard Square(expensive). That's the way city life is.

I lived in an apt building right behind the d school, i believe it was called brookline st or ave..anyway, i shared an apt with 2 other dental student so i ended up paying around 600$/month which was great even 8 yrs ago, but the building was a dump, very old poorly maintained and we had the occasional critters visitors(i.e:mice), but it was the cheapest option and it was only 5 min walking to class, I lucked out with my roomates, it's alway a hit or miss but i highly recommend you try to contact students in your class and get a vibe on who might be a good roomate. Boston is very expensive and d school is very demanding so the less you have to think about commuting and paying too much for rent is a great help.
Good luck with everything

Absolutely not! I just came from living four years in Boston for undergrad (BU). That kind of money will get you a big room in a nice apartment, but yes you'd be sharing it with roommates. Many of my friends have stayed in the city after graduation and their places are beautiful. And although biking can be scary at times, that's what helmets are for 😛

Yes you can save a lot of money getting a 3 bedroom and sharing it among 6 or more students. The Living room can easily be converted into one or two more bedroom and then subleased. There is a new law against that I believe but no one cares; just like no one drives at 55mph or no one who lives here in the US are here legally.

Hey..there are couple of options.. First ook for a place as close to school as you can..it will save you lot of time and while going through the tough 4 years..commuting is the last thing u want to think abt..

Soth end is pretty nice area and you get lot of places to live..you need to keep an eye out..make sure you are checking the craigslist regularly..also talk to senior students..they will be moving out..there are many apartments nearby who have hosted BMC students class after class..lol..
look at Parmlee court/James court/Harrison court/ many times they come up with deals and they are the very very near to school..

Also look places around the main campus (Charles River campus) there is free BU shuttle (from Med campus to main campus with few stops)which runs every half hour (every 15 min during rush hours) and makes commuting very easy..

see places around Fenway park, symphony, back bay, beacon street.. they all are BU STUDENT areas and pretty safe and nice to live..

Guess i have written a lot, if you have any questions,, feel free to ask.. Good luck on your Apt HUNT.. 🙂

I pay $400/month living in Gainesville now. Boston is going to KILL ME!!!
