I asked this question in another thread but then I realized it may be a good thread topic.
When you pay tuition to a program, can that tuition cost covered by stafford loans, so you can still live on a full stipend, or do you live on stipend$ minus tuition$? Do you follow?

I ask because I need to support a family as well as myself.

You can borrow virtually the same way as you did in dental school, as long as you haven't surpassed your limits. (This is what I was told by finaid guy and a resident paying tutition).

So does that mean, I still can live off the full stipend, while borrowing the cost of the tuition?

If you look at the BU website, when they show the financial aid package for OMFS, they list their tuition + cost of living, showing a total of around 40K. This would lead me to believe that in fact you are borrowing all of that money (tuition + cost of living), and your stipend is not touched for any of that. That was my take.

Depends on the stipend I guess, becuase Tufts, BU are located in one of the most expensive cities. Cost of living is high so depends on what your expected standard of living is supplemented by your stipend.

After tuition costs with federal aid it shoudl leave you enough fund through private loans to get through. However beware that at BU they have a limit of how much you can take out, thus there is a limit to funds you can borrow.
