Hi everyone,

I got accepted into BU and UM (university of miami) both in biology. I am having a hard time deciding in which to go. I am planning to go on with pre-dental later.... So where should I go?

for undergrad? it doesn't matter in terms of getting into dental school. go to the school you like the most and that has the best pre-health program and is better rated and all those other factors.

The advantage of going to BU is that you can check out their dental school. Maybe you'll get a chance to meet some dental students when it comes time to find out more about dentistry. That is a minor advantage go to where you will be the happiest though.

I don't mean to hijack your thread, but I have the exact same situation.
However, I know how Miami has a great Biology program (don't know much about BU though) and I'm leaning towards going there, but my dad is kinda forcing me into BU because he claims BU "gives a preference to BU undergrads rather than out of state applicants" when applying to their Dental school. Is this true or is this just some ridiculous brainwashed statement?

It is ridiculously brainwashed statement. They do not give any preferential treatment to BU undergrads and BU is private so instate or outstate it is the same.

BU does not give preference to BU grads.
BU has the advantage of direct interactions with its dental school while you're an undergrad.
BU has an AMAZING science program (maybe i'm preferential, BU alum here), i haven't heard anything about UMiami.

I am a UM alum; they have a strong science program, and I felt that was recognized when I went on my interviews. Miami is a wonderful place to live as a student, as long as you can keep yourself from getting distracted by all that there is to do. Academically I believe it's comprable to BU, so you need to pick where you would be happiest, and think you can do your best.

Go to Miami. Enjoy the weather there. Undergrad institution will not help you much when you're applying to dental schools.

And, like others have mentioned, BU gives no preference to its undergrads. However, one trend that I do see quite often is that it accepts quite a bit of students from its masters class. I think BU has one of the highest masters degree holders in its incoming class (which often leads people to think that BU is one of those schools that are good for getting into specialty programs)---> Again, not the case in reality.

Just listen to yourself; where do YOU want to go? Forget about what others, including parents, say.
