Call it crazy, but travel is VERY important for me (really my major joy in life) and I will be choosing a dental school based in part on whether there are sufficiently extended breaks in the class/clinic schedule to work in any long trips. If you attend VCU or Buffalo can you confirm whether I have the break schedule right for these schools, INCLUDING CLINIC? I didn't have the nerve to ask about this during interviews!

BUFFALO...
Winter Break: 12/21 to 1/2
Summer Break: 6/16 to 8/14 summer after D1; 6/2 to 8/14 after D2&3
(these long summer breaks sound too good to be true -- are you in clinic some or all of this time?)

VCU...
Winter Break:
12/2-1/2 for D1; 12/9-1/2 for D2-4
Summer Break:
after D1, 5/4-5/13; then Pathology; then 6/23-7/24
after D2&3: 5/11-5/29; then summer clinic; then 7/7-7/30

Yes, Buffalo sounds correct. Though remember that boards are during the summer after D2, and after D3 you're expected to do your externship. (Though that sounds like traveling to me! :D)

Also, the summer after D1 is like a piece of second year stuck on...so that may go for longer than 6/16 depending on the year....regardless, the first summer is definitely the shortest.

And I agree on time off being an important factor! How else are you going to get through?

VCU looks right but you take boards during the summer break between D1 and D2

What you have for Buffalo is correct. Having personally experienced the break between D1 and D2 at Buffalo, you do have close to 2 months off. Plenty of time for travel, to do research at the school, or laze around like a bum while you prepare for the hell known as second year...
