Thanks! I was just wondering why you chose Buffalo and if there's any information that you know about the school outside of what is found on the school website.
I chose Buffalo for many reasons:
1) Dentists and Residents (oral surgery resident) spoke highly of the education at Buffalo.
2) Cost- It is one of two state schools
in NY (other one being Stony Brook). I also went to Stony for undergrad and I didn't want to stay there for another 4 years (I'm a NYS resident).
3) According to the dental students there and dentists, Buffalo has a great clinical education. At Buffalo, the D students learn all of the dental lab components too.
4) the students and faculty there are super friendly!
5) research is available ( I was told that the faculty gets in trouble for mentoring too many dental students)
6) only emergency dental clinic in Western NY and only dental school in western NY... This equates to lots of patients, especially because Buffalo is a pretty poor city.
7) there are dental students that end up going to OMFS, ped, endo, prosth, residencies.. So this school doesn't only produce general dentists.
8) dean is editor of JADA, and has won many awards. The president of he ADA graduated from Buffalo. The dean has this goal to make Buffalo internationally known (which is a pro/con)
There are probably soo many more reasons, but these are probably the main ones.
In terms of other info:
The director of admissions explicitly told us that NYS residents receive "extra points" on their application. If you end up on the wait list, they rank applicants into three tiers (high, mid, low). The interview is pretty relaxed (essay, case study with director, and interview with dental student/faculty). I believe they rank you amongst the other interviewees at lunch on interview day.
The website is pretty detailed in terms of providing you with the information about the school. Any other questions let me know
🙂
