hey i know that buffalo know has people do a year of intership/gpr (you know what i'm talking about) before they are licensed in the state of new york. however, does this mean that if you go to buffalo for four years and take a licensing exam for another state on your own, do you STILL have to do an extra year internship thing before they give you your DDS degree????

I'm an out of stater at Buffalo. In New York you are now required to do a residency, I guess an AEGD is also an equivalent for the requirement. Not certain but I think if you are staying in NY you can skip taking the 2nd part of the boards or the clinical portion since you are required to do the residency/AEGD.

Now I guess what you are really asking, if you are leaving NY you only have to satisfy your states requirement. Not sure if any other states have the same deal as NY but that would probably mean just taking the boards and getting licensed for your state or region.

The program to earn your DDS is 4 years at Buffalo and this DDS is a valid degree in all of US and Canada. Earning a DDS has nothing to do with licensing requirements which are determined by individual states and provinces. The state of NY says that to practice in NY, you must have a valid DDS and show proof of completing an ADA-accredited residency program which can be a anything from a 1 year GPR or a 6 year OMS program. NY will not accept the results of any licensing exam. If you never wish to practice in NY, then you can take the appropriate licensing exam in your fourth year (ex: NERB, WREB, etc.) and as long as you pass, you can apply for a dental license in that state and begin practice immediately after you earn your DDS.
