So what are Buffalo acceptees doing about housing? I've never done this university housing thing before, so I'm completely lost! Where do P1 students live on campus? Are apartments cheap around Buffalo? How do I find this stuff out??

yea i was thinking off-campus, just because i want my own room. judging from craigslist, off-campus housing seems cheaper than university housing, so that's another plus! i just have no idea how to start looking. where do i look? and when? am i worrying too early? 😕

first of all, congratulations to you all!
Off campus housing is definitely cheaper but you'll need a car (you going to need it anyways for P4 year). i lived off campus during my P1 year and moved to on campus apartment and stayed there from P2 till the end of pharmacy school because i did not want to wake up extra early and drive in the snow.

Off campus is the way to go. If you want to live in the city and drive about 20 minutes to campus I suggest the elmwood area. Its got nice resturants and stores and you can walk to get coffee/study/groceriers. Rent around elmwood is generally less than 600 for a 1 bedroom. If you want to live in the sterile suburbs around campus and have a 5 minutes drive anywhere around campus is the same (I hate the subrubs). I am not a pharmacity student but I am a student at UB. To tell you the truth there are so many apartments around the campus. They range from $500-$900. It depends where you want to live. It's more expensive closer to school, and of course cheaper further away from school. I know a few of my friends live in Kesington Aparments which are like 15 minutes away from school, they are very cheap from what I know, but I think they are carpy. In my opinion it's a good place to live for a poor college student. 🙂 There is also University Village which is like 5 minutes away from campus. The shuttle from school actually comes there so you wouldn't need a car. I know in those apartments you have your own room and your own bathroom with a shower. You can get a three bedroom, two bedroom, or one bedroom. Each bedroom has a bathroom and a shower. The price of course is cheaper in the three bedroom. I think prices are between $600-$800 per person there.

If you want to search for a place to live search google for apartments in Williamsville or Amherst if you don't want to drive too far to get to school.

I know that there are many apartments on Chestnut Ridge Rd which is not far from shcool.

It depends where you live. If you live close on campus or university apartments then you don't need a car. The shuttle takes you home and from home. The shuttle also goes to South Campus. If you want to shop for food and you live close to North Campus, take the shuttle to South Campus and across the street from campus there is a plaza. There is a Tops (food supermarket store), AJWright (clothing store), Starbucks, DollarTree, I think a Hair place, a few Restaurants and other stores. There is Wallgreens close to South Campus as well. On North Campus itself there is a CVS store, then there is a hair place, a jewelry store and a bunch of places to eat. Also if you have a need to go somewhere further from capmus I know that the bus station is right next to South Campus and the Bus comes to the North Campus as well. If you want to go to a party or something, I know that some shuttles take students to bars. Anyways if you live close on campus, then you don't need a car. If you don't live on campus or university housing, I don't recommend walking, because it's really cold in the winter, plus my the ellicot complex somebody was killed by a serial killer/rapist.

Oh I forgot there are apartments accross the street from the North Campus called Triad apartments you can look that up too if you want.

If you come at 8 or 9 you can find a spot. If you come at 11 or 12 I think you'll be driving around for a bit to find parking. I try to come to school at 8. There is a parking lot right next to the school called Ketter and it only has maybe like 50 spots for teachers and students. If you come around 8 you can park there. If you come after there is parking in other places. But around 11 there are no spots. The same thing by south campus. I know that there is a parking lot further away from the school, (Center of Tomorrow Lot) and if you can't find parking you can park there and the shuttle will take you there. You just have to wait for the shuttle which might be like 15 minutes. Otherwise there are so many students so parking around 11-1 is bad. You can always come at like 10:50 or 11:50 and wait until people leave. Many times if I leave the school at like 11 or 12 people start opening windows and asking me if I am leaving. If I say yes then they follow me and take my spot when I leave.

Many times when I come to campus middle of the day I will park in the stadium and special events lot. They ALWAYS have spots. Many time I get here between 11-1 find spots there. Of course if you hate walking you will have trouble after 9am

Yeah I heard Buffalo winters are brutal. It's pretty far north so that's not surprising.

It is better to have a car in pharmacy school because u'll have to do clinical stuff at maybe eckerd, tops, and etc...i'm not sure what the requirements are now but we used to attend professional meetings and etc. but then again, u can car pool with someone.

thanks pkpd! it sounds so scary driving there though. read this response i got from a buffalo student on sdn: "If u love the cold, love waking up early in the morning to make sure your car is running, ur doors are not stuck, etc, if you love driving with almost 0 visability, U buff is right for you."

Ok I have to speak up b/c Buffalo is getting a really bad rep here! Sure the winters can be bad.....Buffalo is getting a lot of snow right now. BUT the spring/summer/falls are really nice. It didn't start to get bad up there until this past month or so (not counting that freak October storm). So just keep in mind that the winters don't last 12 months out of the year. I lived there all of my life and I have lived down South for the past three years. I would take a Buffalo winter any day over 100 degrees and 100% humidity in the summer down here. At least up there you can add more layers....down here you can only take off so many clothes.... Oh and the people up there are nicer than than the southerners down here.

there is a lot of buffalo haters out there..most of whom never been there. My conversations lately have been somethings of this order:

Hey, does anyone know how easy it is to find someplace to live in Buffalo at the last minute? I applied to Sweethome University Village, but they want me to sign a lease right now. What if I end up not going to Buffalo (I'm still waiting on a decision from Long Island U)? I'll owe them like $7000 if I break the lease! So what I'm thinking is, I'm gonna wait until August and THEN find someplace to live.

Is this too risky???

The $800/month rent is a bit steep. Rent in the area usually runs between $500-$700 (single room apartments).

I personally think it's a little too early to sign leases for August. There is gonna be a ton more posts on apartment boards as spring and summer approach. No need to drop $7000 for a place to stay in August just yet.

Btw...anyone know if South Campus is that dangerous? B/c rent is defn cheaper around South Campus....

I was wondering what the dorms are like at Buffalo. Do you they put the pharmacy students together or is it like a random mash up of students? I'd kinda like to have a PharmD roommate if I decide to go to school at UB. Thanks for any input.

wait until the summer, TONS of apartments open up once the current seniors graduate and leave. I Wouldnt do the sweethome apt's, I hear they are over priced and crappily built (like an expensive dorm with no RA)

npage, from your own experience or hearsay, what apartments/housing would you recommend- about 0-15 min drive from campus, and reasonably priced?

Its hearsay but from moderately reliable sources. They whole things also sounded alittle too good to be true based on what i see in their advertising. I have heard things of thin walls, broken things, kids gone wild on weekends, and not enough parking. But take a little at it and check it out, I may be totally wrong.

As for places to live, are you looking for rural, urban or suburn livin. You could get all those and be only 15 min from campus and rent should range from 400-700 a month
