School 1: Buffalo (IS)
Pros:

  • IS tuition
  • ~90 student class size (same as Rutgers)
  • cheapest (~330k)
  • amazing pre-clinic/clinical facilities
  • only top 10 students are ranked
  • heard Buff ranked pretty high for dental
Cons:
  • away from city area - want to end up near NYC area after graduation
  • haven't heard much about their clinical program
  • patient pool problems?
School 2: Rutgers (OOS)
Pros:

  • near NYC area - would like to end up near NYC after graduation
  • really great clinical program
  • ~90 student class size (same as Buffalo)
  • lots of patients
  • Rutgers is pretty well known
Cons:
  • More expensive - (OOS first year, COA for 4 years ~400k)
  • facilities didn't really impress me the way Buffalo did
  • been hearing Newark isn't that safe
  • everyone ranked
Summary:
I like both schools and they both seem like they would give me a great education. My top 2 deciding factors are 1. cost and 2. location. Buffalo definitely wins with cost but I would like to end up in the areas around NYC after graduation, which Rutgers provides. I was wondering how accessible connecting with the city area if you go to Buffalo. Also I do not mind the cold.

Additionally, I’ve heard a lot about how Rutgers has really tough clinical requirements (which I think is a good thing). But when I talked to my dentist, who went to Buffalo, he said that even though their clinical requirements aren’t as high as Rutgers, you end up doing way more than the minimum there anyway. Both schools seem good/okay for specialization.

I got accepted at Rutgers but got waitlisted at Buffalo in December. Therefore I already deposited 5k for Rutgers prior to the Jan 13 deadline. I was notified today (Jan 16) that I was accepted off the waitlist at Buffalo. Therefore if I go to Buffalo that 5k will be a donation since it's nonrefundable.

Right now, it's a looking like a 60/40 split for Buffalo so please help me decide! Thank you!

No congestion rush-hour rate hikes in Buffalo as far as I know. 🙂

Obviously both schools can get you connected to NY-metro. I'm sure you can find alumni of both schools attending the Greater New York Dental Meeting every fall.

Do not fall to the sunk cost fallacy. You're looking at a bigger tuition bill, and 5K of insurance is small compared to 70-80K debt to finance over the next 10 years or so.

I was in the same boat and chose Rutgers bc of being close to family and all the factors you listed
