I understand that UB requires all students to buy laptops through the university and students need to turn in a copy of purchase receipt to the school before matriculation. What happens if I place an order to get an invoice and then refused the delivery later on? Instead I would get an used one from ebay or an UB dental grad, or stick with my $300 toshiba. I just can't justify to pay $3500 for a lappy.

I'm pretty sure there's no way around it. We're going to have an electronic Vitalbook system, they will catch you when you bring in your beat up 5 year old Toshiba to install the softwares...
Don't feel bad on the $3500 though, Macbook Pros are awesome 🙂

I heard they are not really $3500, they just overestimate to get us some extra financial aid. I would expect them to be around $1500 maybe $2000. But then again, that is all hearsay.

I read that it includes other stuff you might need with your laptop. Things like peripherals like printers, and printer supplies.

yea 3500 is alot but i guess its a small price to pay considering we're going to one of the cheapest dental schools.

There is a forum set up for you on the orientation website that is a more appropriate place for questions such as these. You will also likely get a better response there. As for the computer, you have to buy it. It is configured by the school to work with the programs that the school uses on a daily basis. If you choose not to use the computer offered to you, your attendance will not be properly counted, you may also miss out on some quizzes and exams.

The computer will be around $2500 dollars. The $3500 is to allow you to buy peripherals (hardware and/or software). Most people do not take the peripherals, this leaves you with an extra grand of available financial aide. If you can't justify that, pick another school.

I appreciate your comment. Do you think we can buy the computer of identical model offered by the school elsewhere as long as we turn in a copy of invoice from the specified vendor? I did a random search and all macbook pros on amazon cost less than $2000. That'd be an easy $500 to save before school.

That won't work either, you may as well just stop worrying about it. The prices change every year. There is also a pretty hefty discount because the school will be buying 80 or so of them at once, or so they say. Some of the extra cost is due to options they mandate.
