buffalo? nyu? bu?

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
Isn't buffalo significantly more affordable than the other 2 schools? Buffalo.

Even though I personally love BU.

I cant speak on buffalo or bu but i would highly suggest not going to NYU. I did a master's there and worked in the dental school for research for a year. although the facilities are nice, the students always look dejected and really unhappy. im sure dental school isnt sunshine and rainbows but maybe it was how the teachers dont really care about them (my PI and his colleagues teach and are always badmouthing the students) or how some students are relegated to hallways to carve their waxups (i had to step over them during lunch hours while they were cleaning up their molds). Just a little fyi

Good luck everyone (btw im going to penn next year for dental and so glad i didnt have the choice of going to nyu)

I find this hard to believe. If you have never been a student yourself at NYU Dental...you don't have the knowledge to comment on the conditions of the Dental School.
I also did my masters from NYU...one of the best decisions I ever made.

Students are not relegated to hallways to carve their wax ups... as one of those students, I can tell you it's just students putting final touches on their wax ups before going into class to hand them in... it's like if you're changing an answer on an assignment at the last second... you do it outside before you walk in to turn it in, not right in front of the professor. Just a little fyi

Definitely Buffalo! Way cheaper if you are an in-state resident. And if you're not you become a resident after a year. They just raised in-state tuition to $21K and some change. I don't even want to look up NYU's tuition because I'm sure it is well beyond double that of Buffalo. Also a bunch of my classmates and I have bought houses for $80,000-$100,000 and they are in safe neighborhoods. Our mortages are between $800 and $1000. And I know the rent is much cheaper. I'm not going to lie though, Buffalo isn't my favorite place to live. I'll just have to buy a lamborghini with the $200,000 I saved to make up for it 😀

If you care at all about the quality of you education or the reputation of the school you attend, take BU off the list. Your performance on didactic exams has nothing to do with knowledge or understanding of the material, but rather on your access to recent/old exams. If I recall correctly, less than 40% of our class truely passed the NBDE part 1, the rest failed or had to retake a section.

The clinical experience is even more of a joke. 2 extractions, 6 units of crown/bridge/post/or core, 1 simulated root canal on a mannaquin to graduate. Try bragging about that to your colleagues or patients. There are so few patients that students even have a problem reaching these quotas. The situation is much worse than I can ever describe.

The only reason the school is still in operation is because the huge number of foreign dentists in the advanced standing program brings in lots of money, and the Dean of the school recently held the chair position of the ADA's Commission on Dental Accreditation.

I'd pick Buffalo, but I'm kind of a small-town country boy. The big cities of NY and Boston have a lot to offer and experience, but there is a lot of negative extra baggage that comes with it. Buffalo is very laid back (the opposite of the big cities), and it is near the great lakes (recreation) and Canada (nice people). Once you consider the financial costs, it should be a no-brainer. BU greatly underestimates the cost of attending school. Rent was $2,410 in 2010, but I was quite frugal, and it still cost me $100,000 each year (BU estimated $75,000). You literally could buy a new lamborghini with the difference after 4 years of school if you went to Buffalo, although I would go for a GT40 or Dallara Formulino and still have money left to get the wife a BMW and put a downpayment on a house; you still get to be a dentist, just a better one.

Buffalo. This is a no brainer. It provides the strongest clinical experience.
