Buffalo vs. Pitt

Hello SDN,

I'm an international student who has been accepted to 4-year DDS/DMD programs. I have put my deposit at Buffalo, but today I was accepted at Pittsburgh. I'm having difficulty choosing one over the other.

Cost won't be an issue since the total estimated budget at Buffalo and Pittsburgh are roughly the same (around 320k for international student). School reputation, and residency placements are important factors, and I'm not sure which school is better.

For those who are attending Buffalo or Pittsburgh and was in a similar situation, could you please shed some light as to how you made your decision? Any information would be greatly appreciated.

I would say go to Pitt. I go to Pitt, and overall it is a pretty decent school and Pittsburgh is a pretty decent city. To be fair I have never been to Buffalo's school, but the city itself is a hole and I wouldn't want to live there for 4 years. 🙂

I'm a D4 at Pitt and I love it. Pittsburgh is actually a pretty nice place to live, it's affordable, there's a ton of fun stuff to do, and the sports teams are awesome. I didn't really know how good the program was until I got into dental school, but Pitt is amazing. We have one of the best, if not THE best, ASDA chapters in the country. The students are great at helping each other out, it's not a cutthroat environment. This year in my class, EVERYONE who applied to specialty programs got accepted somewhere. Ortho, Perio, OMFS, Pedo... you name it, if you want to specialize Pitt will help you to do it.

I am not going to specialize, I plan on purchasing an existing practice after graduation. Most of my class ~50% plan on doing a GPR.

Can anyone tell me what they didn't like about Buffalo or Pitt? And I'm not talking about location and weather. Any complaints about the curriculum, scheduling patients, etc?

I will be applying this upcoming cycle and was wondering if you did your undergrad in the US? If you don't mind me asking, what were your stats like?

I will be applying to both Buffalo and Pitt as well.

I didn't get the Dean's Scholarship which means I will have to pay $40k to $50k more than if I were to attend Buffalo or Pitt.
