Another thread made me think of this, but I didn't want to derail it.

There are some classes that are really easy that I could work into my current schedule in addition to the classes I'm already taking - like a 2 credit word 1 class or a 2 credit "introduction to the world wide web" class. Would it be worth taking those classes for the bump they would give to my GPA? It would be impossible for me to take those classes and not get an A out of them.

since they're only 1 or 2 credits they wouldn't really impact your GPA much.

people say they look to see if you're padding your schedule but if they look at your GPA numbers, how are they going to discern immediately whether they were blow off classes or not?

Sounds like famous last words to me. 🙂

When they teach you things like "Use your mouse to place the cursor next to the word math in the second sentance and hit the delete key 5 times to get rid of the word" can YOU think of a way to flunk them? 😀

If spelling is important then maybe. "sentance"

Just kidding.

Bah - the one time I forget to hit the spell check button....

Yeah I took what I thought was a cake course at UF. It was a 2 hour Animal Science course for sophomores.

I ended up having to write a research paper and attendance was graded. I missed too many classes and I would have gotten a B+ instead of an A if I didn't end up with a 100 on the final, which was given directly after my genetics final. I studied for that final more than any other because I didn't want to explain to an adcom why I got a B+ or B in a cake course.

The only case in which I wouldn't do it is if you are a junior/senior and these are 100-level courses and/or their titles scream "bird course" ("physics for poets").

People say the research and directed study classes are cake too, but they are still classified as science (bio or chem or whatever), and people still do them. GPA does matter - this has been proven. Do what you feel you must, but work as hard as you can in your classes that matter. You need to have something to show there too.
