Burn out....
Started by JDatHeart
I'm feeling really burnt out right now... I feel like I don't have enough energy any more to read and do my shifts and everything else... Any suggestions? Anyone been in a similar situation?
Every medical student on the planet. Past and present. Ever in existence.
You'll get through it. Keep your eye on the prize.

Think happy thoughts.
I try to think how grateful I am that I'm not in corporate America. Or law school.

Yeah, Id hate to be my age and making $250,000 for the past 4 years. Working as hard as we have to get where we are, we'd probably be C-Suite already...
But seriously, it gets way better, and is totally worth it, even though the pay doesn't for a long time. A long time.

Like everyone else said, most students go through this. I personally had a hard time getting to sleep at an early hour, which made it more difficult. I think trying to get to bed earlier and practicing good sleep hygiene will help (no caffeine at night, no TV in bed, etc).
I also found working out to be a necessary cathartic.

Everyone says it gets better. I wish I could agree, but it seems like it just goes on.
/sarcasmBaffling. My clinical rotations have been a breeze and I pick up top shelf evals from every attending. Get more sleep?

For sure. I'm at the end of M3, down to the end of week 42 out of 48, and on one of the easier rotations of the year -- no more surgery, no more OB/gyn. I'm still just dragging half the time.
But seriously, it gets way better, and is totally worth it, even though the pay doesn't for a long time. A long time.
Thank god. Curious though: what makes it way better?

Find some outlets for stress.
It certainly hasn't gotten better for me, sorry.

You're surgery, right?
Do you feel like anything's better about residency vs. med school?

I know this wasn't addressed to me but I thought I'd chime in anyway. Since starting residency I've taken comfort in the fact that I no longer have to feign excitement over things I am not at all excited about. I can grump a bit without worrying about a negative eval for lack of enthusiasm.
That's pretty much it!!
For the most part, the way i get over that is to read mostly about stuff i had seen that day...that way the reading doesn't feel as laborious and it just feels more interesting.
