I know this is a general question, but what is the best way to go about specializing with burn patients?

Are there any non-surgical specialties for treating burn pts?

I believe the traditional way would be through general surgery followed by a burn fellowship. I am doing research in burns and I am also interested in burn. It seems like most burn surgeons went through the general surg route, but I have heard of some centers where plastics runs the unit. They must use critical care docs a fair amount I would think. Does anyone know? It seems a little difficult to find good info on burn fellowships.

Burn fellowships are typically completed after either a full general surgery or plastic surgery residency with occasional Trauma/Critical Care training. As noted above, Burn units tend to either be run by Plastic Surgery or Trauma Surgery trained attendings. The fellowships are generally 1 year in length.

Would a foreign trained physician , who completed a foreign plastics residency, be able to go directly into a burn fellowship, assuming all other requirements, exams.... were met? Or would it require completing an american residency first?

Would depend on the program. Some may require that you be BE/BC and others may not. Given the relative unpopularity of Burn Trauma fellowships, you may not have a difficult time. If I find out more info, I'll post here.

Great, I appreciate it very much.

But will i be able to achieve this directly from completing a plastic surgery residency in brazil? or wiould I need further training prior to being accepted as a fellow? I know each program will differ.

So does anyone have any idea of how many burn centers use general surgeons vs plastics (with fellowship of course)?

Do any burn centers use hospitalists or non-surgeons? What specialties would they be (aside from hospitalist?)

I have some interest in burn treatments (I was very badly burned over 20% of my body, full thickness) but don't want to be a surgeon.
