Hello, I am deciding between two schools. From an accreditation standpoint, board scores, match successes, and opportunities (community, hospital affiliation, research, etc) which is school would be better objectively?

I dig your profile pic, you're looking young as ever Charmander

I know students and faculty from VCOM who loved that school. I know their Louisiana campus is somewhat new, but I assume based on their Auburn campus that it will be a solid place to study.

I know nothing of burrel. Can you give us a pro-cons list? How much do they cost?

board scores depend more on you (UFAPS) than your med school honestly.

Assuming one isn't dramatically better, I'd go for what's cheapest. Or closest to family.

Hey y’all!
I had a dilemma about choosing a school.

Burrell

Pros:
  • Last year’s COMLEX pass rate of 94 percent, however the previous years pass rates were 90, 92 , 91 , and 90
  • Decent rotation sites in military-based hospitals, and a preceptor with many connections to UTEP hospitals
  • Proximity to a big city in El Paso
  • Decent location, las cruces has a little over 100,000 people
  • Relatively cheap place to live
  • Match list is solid for a DO school (4 ANES, ortho, radiology, etc.)
  • Pass/fail
  • Opportunities for community service

Cons:
  • Expensive (63k for yearly tuition)
  • Far from home (9-hour drive)
  • Relatively new, first-class started during 2016
  • Early struggles, but COMLEX scores and match rates are better
  • “Average” vibes in terms of faculty/students. Granted, I interviewed online so.
  • Limited research opportunities compared to VCOM
  • Lack of support for struggling students (high attrition rate)

EDWARD VCOM-LOUISIANA

Pros:
  • Cheap for DO school standards (50k a year)
  • Loved the faculty, probably my most genuine interview experience I’ve had in terms of both the students, professors, and administration
  • Close to home (4 hour drive)
  • Beautiful campus, and access to nearby undergrad university resources
  • VCOM is well established
  • Comlex pass rate was around 99 percent
  • Plenty of community service opportunities and research opportunities
  • Alot of local partnerships with different specialities (optha, ortho, gen, surg)

Cons:
  • This VCOM branch has not matched a class yet
  • Classes are letter-graded
  • Smaller, more older town (population of around 50k)
  • Not a lot to do around the area.
  • No preceptors or rotations in Texas ( home state)
