I am attending BU this summer, and so far yet to hear from the school about financial aid.

To those who got into the program, did you hear anything from the financial aid office? 😕

thanks

I didnt get anything either. So I called the office and they told me that there were other forms to file besides fasa if I want to borrow $$. You can log onto BU's website to find out more or call them cuz they told me that there are deadlines for those applications.
Hope that helps!

Thanks a lot! 👍
What is the deal with BU?...April 18th deadline for finaid?...i didn't get any info on this....

Isnt that just for institutional assistance?? Is institutional assistance for need based assistance?? Im lost in this financial aid thing.

If you think you won't qualify for financial aid then all you need to do is fill out the Direct loan application( for some reason its in the Application for Financial Assistance School of Dental Medicine on page 3) and FAFSA. If you have qualified for financial aid before in undergrad, then you might have a good chance at getting it at BU. If that is the case, then you should fill out Application for Financial Assistance School of Dental Medicine in addition to the direct loan and FAFSA applications.

I don't know why but the financial aid office doesn't send many notifications, just call them at 617-638-5130, and double check on due dates.
You can start applying for private loans in may or june.

How much is FAFSA offering this year? what is the maximum amount a student can receive from the government?

I want to minimize my private loans BIG time, if I can. So, what amount will the school help me receive without private loans?

I wish BU was more informative about the financial aid issue with students.

The maximum on the Direct Loans is about 45,000 per year. Maximum that BU will let you borrow is about 75,000 which inludes the direct loan and any private loans you will take out.

BU estimated the total cost for incoming class of 2010 to be $77-78,000/year. If we can borrow upto $75,000, then the students will be slightly short changed on the total cost by $3,000 - or is that covered by the acceptance deposit?. 😀

Sorry, the estimate i mentioned was for our year since I wasn't aware of the 2010 estimate.

Whats up boss? Hope the dental anatomy test went alright...while we are on the topic, how about I ask you a question too, since Im completely clueless on how this works. 😀

So they say the deadline is April 18th for financial aid. But, the deadline for FAFSA is much later...cant I just fill out a FAFSA later on and get aid? I did that last year and I was fine. All these dudes in our class are telling me I need to get it done by the 18th though...what do you think? Good luck with micro...its a beyatch.

Hey Rez, on the financial aid website it states that the 18th deadline applies to those who are applying for the BU financial assistance. However if you are just applying for Direct loans, i think the deadline is a different date. They dont mention anywhere about deadlines for direct loan borrowers only and FAFSA. To be on the safe side call the office monday.

study hard, we are so close for this to be over.

I just finished (today) all of Boston’s financial aid stuff. I would defiantly check the website for more info if you’re confused. There’s a whole bunch of mierda that you need to fill out/send in before the 18th. (What the heck do they need address labels for?)

P.s. ANYONE HERE FROM THE NORTH WEST GOING TO BU IN FALL?

On the site, it says the deadline is 6:00 p.m. April 18, 2006 or within 45 days of admission, whichever is later. I was accepted 03/17/06, + 45 days, that would mean 05/01/2006. Either way, I will go ahead and submit my form tomorrow before 6:00 pm.

What did you mean by address labels? did you have to send the documents to different addresses?

Does anyone know what the maximun Financial assistance this would lead to..... will it be the $45,000 (direct loans)?

If you look at BU’s financial aid request form that you will be filling out, various things are listed on the first page that need to be sent in with your application. If you look under the “OTHER” subject heading (very last) you will see “Typewritten address labels” or something like that. (Don’t forget copies of your (& parents) W2’s as well )

I tried to call BU financial aid office today, and I couldn't get thorugh an agent. I wanted to verify the within 45 days of admission deadline for instutional aid. I hope that information is correct. 😀

Do the leg work. Don't just try to call. If you look at the application page on the web, you will see that the whole 45 day thing is cool. I would reccomend sending that stuff in ASAP though. You probably won't get as much as someone who turns in their stuff by the alternate deadline even with the acceptance thing.

I'm from the northwest... seattle. I need a room mate! Also, the financial aid deadline is a joke... how could they expect us to know that there was asupplemental application without informing us? Plus, if you try calling the FA office, they never pick up or return your calls/e-mails. 😡

Dont worry about the deadline...as long as they have an initial application in by that date, you can turn in any missing items later. I went by the office yesterday and dropped them the main application, knowing that i had other stuff left to hand in (my tax returns, my parents tax returns, etc...). She asked me where that stuff was and I told her I didnt have it. She said for me to turn it in whenever I get a chance. Dont sweat the financial aid stuff, you guys are ahead of the game. I didnt fill out a FAFSA until the night before the deadline last year and I was chillin.

ok... so I did a little bit more research on the Financial Aid dates. Supposedly, the April 18th due date is for continuing students who are already attending BU dental. So all new acceptees, like myself, are suppose to send in our information withint 45 days of our acceptance; however, it seems like the financial aid office doesn't care when you send them the application. When I called to talk with them, a lady informed me that they haven't received their FA budget to start allocating between students. So, if you're a new student, dont' fret and send in your FA application asap. Don't spend $30 like me to ship my information overnight to be there on April 18th at 10 AM 🙁

Hey, I was wondering if you are still looking for a roomate. Have you heard of James Court (right across from BUMC) which are brand new apartments? Also, there is a housing directory which lists apartments for rent that you can check out.

hello,
does anyone here know if boston university participates in the new plus loan for grad students? i have been trying to reach the OSFS but haven't been able to speak to anyone. i even emailed them a couple of days ago but haven't heard from them. i called the studentloan xpress and they said that BU at the moment doesnt' participate but that's not confirmed cuz this loan just got approved so it's a possibility that they may go for it.
it'll be a bummer if they don't cuz it's the next best thing to the federal stafford 🙄
if anyone has any info on it , plz share it.i'd appreciate it!

Did anyone received any financial aid notices from BU, besides info about excel? thanks.

I emailed then asking about Federal Direct Loans and how much private loans I should be applying for and they told me that the budget for Class of 2010 has not been determined yet. It should be set sometime this week, so check the website. Federal Direct Loans will not be processed until the budget is set, so we have to just wait. For the private loans... we have to wait too b/c we should apply for what Federal Direct Loans does not cover. Federal Direct Loans covers a set amount but I dont remember what that amount is. Here's a website that you can look at: http://www.bumc.bu.edu/Dept/Content.aspx?DepartmentID=160&PageID=2727

so, are you saying students should wait to hear from the school before they file with FAFSA?

no... file for FAFSA early. but the school told me they havent processed the requests for Direct loans yet b/c the budget is not yet set.

First year total cost is $78,357 - how much of that will be covered by federal loans? also, does the new PLUS loans become available this year?
for direct loans: $8,500 (subsidized) + $10,000 (unsubsidized) + $26,667 (Super Unsubsidized) = $45,167

$78,357 - $45,167= $33,190 you'll need from private loans.... I dont know if the PLUS loan is available or not. you'll have to ask someone else.... thats all i know.

Was the $3,000 deposit already factored in? or not?

oh.. i forgot about that. sorry.

Cold Front said:
Do you know?
i think the $3000 should be deducted from the $78k so its now $75k. But if you want to make sure, email the OSFS (financial aid office)

The PLUS loans will be available to first year dental students this year (according to the financial aid office). They are still working with the government on what the interest rate should be. It will be right around 8.5%, but the school will send that info out to students from next week.
