I made a business card for midyear/residency etc. Since I made it sorta last minute, I didn't get it from my school stationary store, instead I made it myself (and have some experience with graphic design/etc.). It would probably look different from a regular student business card, and it is a neat and nice looking card but now I'm afraid it doesn't look professional enough. I went to a regional residency and made my own cards with my own card stock and the printing came out awful, but even so, one director was really friendly and in fact asked for my card which I told her it was really messy but she was more than happy to take it. So I assumed that since having a business card is optional, I don't have to be nitpicky on the format of the card, but now I'm not sure. Any tips?

Business cards may be optional but I would keep in mind that anything you put out there is going to represent you. If you are really worried they don't look right I would recommend not giving them out. I've been told cards should be "normal" and not too loud. I personally didn't make any because I couldn't see myself using them. But the ones I've seen have been white/beige/cream with black fonts.

I know what you mean. I had a pre-midyear kind of anxiety but luckily it turned out to be fine and a lot of people actually complimented my cards too. I didn't give out to too many places, but I am surprised at the number of places that asked me for a CV (which I did not finish at the moment). My professor who is responsible for residency, midyear and all said to not bring your CVs to midyear as almost no programs take them. I was asked 4 times at the least!
