One thing that Inspires me to become a dentist is that most dentists have their own practice. Which is exciting to me because your not working for anybody but yourself.

My mind has always been interested in business since the day I was born, I also was very hands on, I loved to build legos and make things with my hands.

Dentistry is the career which lets me run my own business, work with my hands and make money, and they call it work. Well all I hope is that it turns out to be what I expect.

Now the business aspect of dentistry, I hopefully aim to start a business and have other dentists work for me after I have est. a practice of a few years. I hope to provide my customers with a superior product so that I can attract a large client base. Once Im in the field I am sure I can find things to distinguish myself from other dental offices that will make people come to me.

For example, a way to drown out the noise that patients hear when they are given a cleaning. Im sure there are products that help reduce the noise, which can improve customer satisfaction.

How many people in Dentistry actaully view their practice as a business, to generate profit and attract customers. To make money and to open more practices and hire more dentists.

Ot take your profits and invest the money into other areas like real estate or stocks or entreprenuership.

Or do most dentists call it a day and go home to their families.

Im guessing its a personal choice, and your ambition. But if your ambition is there, is there a way for profit to me made?

alot of people view dentistry as a business.. but you have to remember you are not a car dealership, you aren't trying to attract a customer, sell an item and then give them the boot.. you are actually taking care of the well being of your patients and they are not just customers then. so you can't view it completely as a business as it will be unethical.

as a side note, many dentists do become "business owners" where they hire several dentists under their hand and use the income they generate to make outside investments (its doable)...

You said this about dentistry a month ago in a pre med forum

"When It comes to enjoyment, I mean I know its psychiatry I like, reading about the mind and the way the mind functions is so much more exciting than cleaning teeth to be honest"

Im not even that regular of a poster but hey I am really finacky. Plus its not like I am famous and I need to be held accountable to what I say. What does it matter to you guys about whether or not I become a dentist. I dont remember asking that question.

It's called headphones.. Keep "reaching for the stars" my friend.

If you only care about business, start your own franchise, or buy into one. You don't have to do dentistry to be innovative in business, and four years put into buying a franchise will be easier than dental school.

So interest in business and playing with legos as a kid is enough to make you want to apply to dental school?? No wonder there are so many applicants now-a-days. Thank god people like me with an actual interest in Dentistry but lacking in the GPA (especially with the rising stats) wont get in...wouldnt want those people who had a bad freshman year but true passion for the field to be my dentist, much rather have the guy who wanted to make a buck.

LoL. Being a business = unethical? Why? Is it "bad" to be rich or sucessful? : )
The truth is that if you provide the absolute best care to the patient and have very solid business practices in your practice your dental office will be an excellent business. Why? Because if you provide something very good, people will be willing to pay for it. If you manage your business very well, it will be profitable. It's complete crap when people say that all the dentists that are rich or run a "business" or take "practice management" classes are unethical. They are providing a needed and better service and are proprotionally compensated.

Sound-deafening earphones drown out noise. You might also try wireless headphones tuned to a flatscreen TV on the ceiling.

Someone mentioned that you seem more interested in the business end of dentistry, and if that is the case, they were right. Why go to dental school and accumulate hundreds of thousands in debt and waste 4 years when you could go into any business and try to be innovative and make tons of money. Hell, you can do it with almost no overhead nowadays and work from home if you have an innovative product to sell. Youtube, google, myspace are extreme examples, but there are plenty of million dollar ideas out there today that don't ask you to put in 4 years and $200,000 up front (not including additional fees and business start up)

as for this piece of reasoning. No, you aren't famous, but yes you are accountable for what you say. Just because you aren't George Bush, Oprah Winfrey, or Tom Cruise, doesn't mean you people can't call you out when they think your hypocracy is showing.

I don't think anyone said that any successful dental business is unilaterally unethical. You're right, you can make money and have a good business while still treating patients well, but you can likewise have a good business while treating your patients like know-nothing rubes that should be bled for every penny they have. Most successful dentists sit somewhere in that spectrum between the two extremes.

There really is nothing unethical about being successful and rich. It's just how you got to that point or stay at that point that may or may not be ethical.
