does anyone who got accepted buying a new car?
my current automobile is the crap..
i am thinking of buying volvo v50
what do you guys think?
is there anyone who bought a new car?

2005 altima SE-R w00t w00t 😀

Im contemplating on getting a new car. But I think it's a bad idea to buy one using school loan money? I really won't be able to get one in 4 years because I'll be paying back dental school, so I'm thinking I should get one. Good idea or bad idea??

bad idea. theoretically buying a car is the worst investment. If you have a car that works use it

The financial aid people recommended not making too many credit purchases. They may not be able to help you pay for high CC balances or car/insurance payments (depends on your situation I guess).

That being said, I just bought a 2007 Altima a couple months ago with cash [and got rear-ended already 😡]. Just keep in mind that if you have to use any financial aid to pay for it, it might take a looong time to pay off

If you can stand it, just keep the car you have. If your spouse insists, as mine did, buy a new car (and then find somewhere cheaper to live for dental school). Got a 2007 Honda CR-V, great car/SU-V/whatever you call these little SUV-ish vehicles. Leather's worth it, too. (oh yeah, there is no way we would have gotten this if my wife's parents hadn't helped with the down payment).

I am thinking about doing the same thing. I am married and have 2 cars. One of which is a Ford F-150. I am not sure that I will need that during D-school. I will have it paid of in a few months which makes me want to say I should just keep it, but the gas goes so fast in it.

I feel your pain. A few years ago I had my first ever new car only 3 weeks off the lot before someone jackass on the freeway rear-ended me. It took 3 months for the repairs b/c parts were new and hard to get. What a feeling, making super-size payments on a new car I couldn't drive.

To the OP, if you're gonna get a new car, how much do you think you'll have for payments every month? I've been assuming we'll all be broke and eating ramen.

I too am looking at this issue... only I have NO car right now. It's really a difficult thing. I'm pretty sure I can't make it through dental school with no car, but that gives me about 8 months in which to save enough to buy a used car. I just can't justify using dental loans to pay for car loans/leases when the car itself just keeps depreciating in value. So, hopefully I can get a vehicle reliable enough for the next 6 years on the cheap. Eek!

Well I guess you peeps need to weigh or options. If your current vehicle will cost you a lot of time & money with maintenance over the next for years. If you decide it would be advantageous to buy a new car. Get a good used car. If you look around you can find a good car for around 4000 that will get you through dental school.

If you only drive 5-10 miles per day, don’t buy an expensive car. During my dental school years, I drove the same 84 Dogde Colt that I bought after I graduated from high school. After dental school, I did ortho residency in a different state so I bought a $1200 Honda Civic and I drove it for 2 years. Neither car gave me problems. Save $$$ for something else.

I love cars 😀

Buy the one you like~ but not too expensive. around 20,000 i guess so you can ride until you make descent money after becoming a dentist.

If you can’t afford a 20k car, you can lease one. With 359/month, you can drive a brand new 328i BMW…..free oil change and maintenance for 4 years.

Don't forget that you will need to spend a lot of money toward the end of your 4th year to take the state board exam. And you can’t work right a way b/c you have to wait for the board result.

If you're going to dschool in an area where you need a dependable car..I say buy one now and pay it off BEFORE school starts. When I graduated undergrad this past spring my car was on its last legs..(err..wheels..hehe), so I decided to spring and bought a 2007 impreza. I'll pay it off by July (living with my parents to save money) and then I know it'll be good for at least the next four years. I would NOT use loan money to get a car. It's not that hard to live w/o one in most of the cities where dental schools are.
