Greetings. Has anyone purchased an imaging unit from renewdigital.com? It seems like their prices are competitive but I just dont have enough background on this company regarding reputation, quality of product, etc. What do you think about purchasing used/refurbished imaging hardware? Any recommended retailers? Cheers.

Why don't you try to call Panoramic Corporation (pancorp.com)? This company sells both digital and film based xray units directly to you....no middle man. I bought 4 units from them. I am going to buy another refurbished one from them for my sister, who is setting up her second GP office.

The film based unit runs like a tank. It never breaks down nor requires technical support. $10k (including installation + operating instruction) is all you have to pay for a refurbished film based unit and it will last you your entire practicing career. The image quality is not as good as the digital one but it is good enough for what I do every day.

Be very careful buying a used pano. They are extremely delicate and if not transported correctly are easily broken beyond repair. Have it inspected and properly transported if you do buy one.

I thought the same thing about my film unit, until a freak electrical event fried the motherboards. Not a cheap fix, I'm looking at $10K to fix something that cost me $8K to begin with. The machine was great until it wasn't. Even film units can have motherboards and other electrical parts necessary to program the machine.

Renew seems like a legit company. I have talked with them on the phone a few times and they seem knowledgeable. Have you checked on Dentaltown for experiences with them over there?

One thing I like about Panoramic Coporation is they offer the same warranty for all of their refurbished units. The design of their xray units is very simple. In 8 years of heavy usage, I haven't had any problem. The simpler the design, the fewer problems you will experience. I've driven 4 different BMWs and 3 different Mercedes and I had to bring these cars to the dealers for repairs (mostly electrical problems) a lot more often than my sister's Toyota Sienna van. This is why I never buy German cars. I lease them instead.

Interesting analogy with the german autos charles, and humerus. I would consider a film based pan/ceph however digital is the way to go for the future, when doing ceph analysis its just much easier on the PC..and has many advantages. I will have to check out Pancorp though as mentioned above. I spoke to a friendly orthodontist recently and he advocated speaking with a Kodak repair technician. He said these techs frequently remove older models from offices all over and then have to sell them anyways. This seems like a safer way to go however probably more expensive if youre buying from the retailer. I will check Dentaltown as well. Renew offers a warannty, installation, and delivery which sounds like a terrific bundle. Thanks fellas I will keep researching
