dear friends,

do any of you have any inkling as to how an IMG (international medical graduate) can bypass the USMLE for practising in the US ?

i am aware that there are american medical schools in the caribbeans and guyana which follow the american curriculum. i am already a graduate. if i do my post graduation from one of these med schools, will i be entitled to practise in the US ?

regards,

saikripa.🙂🙂🙂

I don't think there's anyway to bypass the MLEs. I'm guessing the only exception might be if you get registered as a doctor in Canada (which means you'll have to take Canadian exams etc) but even then this varies from state to state.

I'm pretty sure that everyone has to take the USMLE's even Canadians. USMLE's are required for Residency training and just about everyone has to do residency (unless you are a one of a kind professor/leader in a field).

the usmle is required in order for you to get a license to practice medicine, even a limited one!!

Every year there are a couple of people recruited to the US to fill tenure track academic positions who will get their medical license without any of the USMLEs.

Pretty rare occurence as f_w describes but it does happen. Best to assume that you must complete USMLE Steps 1 -3 to be a full licensed physician in the US.

With that, moving to International Forum. This forum is to post job openings, not for questions about how to get a job in the US.

You're likely also going to need to complete a US residency, in addition to passing the various Steps of the USMLE, to practice as an attending physician in the States.
