Can you guys suggest some programs that are chill in terms of workload, yet have good didactics and teaching? I'm interested in a program that has a fairly good rep without being particularly competitive, and is located in a large city. Also, a place that is friendly to DOs/FMGs. I'm considering states like California, Arizona, New Mexico, Oregon, Texas especially (maybe Florida also) though am also open to other places.

Also, would it be stupid not to fast track? I'm just wondering if I'd have more security by completing my general adult program before fellowship, rather than starting a child program (and it not working out for some reason) and then getting stuck as a PGY4 without any residency completion.

Thanks!

In the unlikely event that things don't work out, you'll still be fine. After you complete your first year of fellowship, you have completed your 4 years of psychiatry residency and are given the same stamp of approval that all psychiatry residents are given after PGY-4.

I'm not opposed to a moderate workload, and I'm genuinely interested in the child and adolescent training. I'm just looking for a place that has a relaxed friendly supportive atmosphere, where my own learning curve can be tolerated.

Actually... I should say a place where my learning curve can be supported as opposed to merely tolerated. I'm just wondering if I can find a program where I enjoy actively learning and have a balanced life, as opposed to feeling stressed out too often. I'd perhaps like a place that has a psychoanalytic institute or someplace where I can pursue my own interest areas within psychiatry, rather than not have time to do anything because I'm working long hours. I also want a place where fellows are genuinely happy and would choose their program all over again in a heartbeat because they feel listened to and very supported and can still have time to be with their families. Don't want a place where people feel humiliated or frequently at risk of termination for being slightly inefficient or for other minor issues.
