C- grade in a class problem

Hey everyone,

so as i was looking at the requirements for applying to the DO schools i noticed that they don't count C- as a passing grade. I'm sorry if this sounds stupid but i never knew of this since my school (UCI) counted it as passing.

I am just about to apply but i remembered that i had gotten a C- in the first Ochem class that i took and i never bothered to retake it. The next 2 Ochem classes that came along (quarter system) i did fine in so i forgot about that first class.

Does this mean though that because of that one C- i don't meet the minimum requirements for applying to any of the DO's? Can an upward trend in the ochem series grades maybe negate that or at least let them consider me as an applicant or should i not even bother applying?

I'm really hoping this one C- doesn't make it impossible for me to apply. Any input would be greatly appreciated.

I guess it depends on the school. I had a C- in one class and at all my interviews, I was never asked about it and I got a couple of acceptances. It goes to show that you can still get in with a C-, but it depends on the school.

It's a kid thing; when you haven't got anything mature or intelligent to add to a good question you come up with something stupid to say. Maybe he should just stick to reporting his race times?

To the OP -- I doubt your C- will keep you from getting interviews. At worst, they might require you to retake prior to matriculation. Good luck.

I am going to explain what I am doing to those who take everything I say personally...

1. I am not trying to feel superior to anyone. I make fun of myself as much as anything else on here.

2. People (including me) take every little issue with their application, and make it out to be the end of the world. We are all on here because we are trying to do something that has taken a lot of time and hard work from us, so it is only natural that we worry. But sometimes, we all let it get to us a little too much.

For example, there was a post on pre-allo a while back. Something like "3.6 GPA, 38 MCAT. What are my chances?". And believe it or not, there were people telling him to apply to mid and low-tier schools. It is that kind of mindset that I make fun of over here, because this board is typically a little more relaxed. A lot of older applicants (I just turned 30. Holy crap!) who I think can appreciate that kind of thing a little more.

This process needs a little levity from time to time. I try to provide that. If you don't appreciate it, then I'm sorry you feel that way. But please stop complaining to me. Or don't stop. It doesn't really matter to me.

Well, I think the OP has a legitimate concern because some school's specifically say that a C- is not a 'passing grade' when you fill out the application. The OP is concerned that this one C- will prevent him/her from being able to even be looked at by these schools.

To the OP: I too have a C- from UCI, it was in physics though, 3B (sucky class and I will NEVER take it again!!!). I don't know how much of a difference it will make. You might want to contact the schools to find out.

As for the C-, consider your GPA and MCAT...and the other aspect of your app. Can they cover your little mistake? Do you still think you can be a good Doc despite your C-? Do you still have the fire to commit next ten years of your life to nothing but(exaggerating, I know~) study and work 24/7?
If Yes, you should be OK!

To Jpatzi - i noticed you said you got a C- too in a class and still got accepted. That is definitely awesome and congrats. I was wondering though if the C- you got was in a core class or more of an elective class?

What i'm thinking is maybe they won't mind a C- in an elective or non core class to bio and chem but my C- in ochem is in a core or big class thats greatly related to the bio major so i don't know if that will have more of a negative impact or not.

But thanks though because at least this reassures me that i can still apply to the schools. If i get into some place and they want me to retake it before matriculating hey...i'll be glad to do that =)

AZCOM and CCOM both specify on their websites that C- grades will not be accepted for prereq classes. For those schools and any other with that policy you would need to retake. You should probably check with each school to find out if it's worth applying there without a retake.

Dont trust what websites say or dont say either. I had the same problem with 80% of my schools. DCOM does not say anything about a C or better yet it's their policy to not except C-'s until after you've paid your money for the secondary. . .

My C- was in Organic Chemistry 2. But I retook the course and got a good grade, so maybe that is why I was never asked about it at interviews.

I just hope that i won't be wasting a bunch of money by applying and then having no schools interview or even send me secondaries just because of that one class i didn't retake.

I would retake it now if i could but most junior colleges and other schools have already started so i can't add myself in anymore.

Anyone have any suggestions about what to do?

Maybe you could let the school's know that if they won't accept it that you will retake it in the winter quarter or the summer. This way they can see it as 'plan to take course' instead of a 'have taken course'. I would contact the school's individually about this though just to be sure that they would accept this circumstance. It's not likely that you would get a C- or even a C again if you retook it so I don't think an 'in progress' or 'plan to take' would be an issue, but rather if they would accept this kind of arrangement.

hey, i graduated from UCI 4 years ago and got a C- in the last quarter of honors general chemistry. ive been on 4 interview so far and only at western did they even mention it. I retook the class this past summer so that helped.

but so far i have acceptences from western and touro - CA

just retake the class either at UCI or a community college, its not a problem.
