Most people get a C in Calculus. I did.

You don't even use math in medical school.

This is definitely a pre-allo question; if you know it exists, then why...

Thank you so much for all of your responses. Given how panicked I feel at the moment, I just wanted to get answers from people that have successfully completed the premed process.

I got a C in Calc I, B+ in Calc II, and C in Calc III
I also got a B+ in Physics I, and a C- in Physics II. You are far from out of the race.

I got a C in Calculus and and C in Russian Politics

I would argue that a C in calculus is ESSENTIAL.
Without it, you have alulus...which doesn't even make any sense.

Humor like this is why I'm afraid Med. School will turn my personality into that of a rock!

Hey Pal, there are peeps like me running all around med school...you saying that I'm gonna turn you into a rock?

I think he said your personality rocks!

When I started first year, I thought my days of math were over. But in fact biochemistry, physiology, pharmacology, biostatistics and epidemiology, microbiology, genetics, and the board exam all require basic math and to some degree, algebra. During my MD/PhD year, I had to know how to derive the Michaelis-Menton equation. I even remember someone's notes including some dy/dx business. So saying that you don't use math in medical school is not entirely accurate. But I would say the math aspect is easy, while remembering every single equation is not. Usually cancelling units will get you through the problem 50% of the time.

You are automatically excluded because you are getting a Ph.D.

You don't need to use any math in medical school. I suppose you can if you want to, but the questions can be solved without it.

I don't count simple arithmetic, as a Down's monkey can do that.

Sorry for the delay in responding, but I was taking Step I. Ugh.

Anyway, I am not doing a PhD anymore. But all those classes I spoke about were regular medical school classes and math was definitely involved. I had two Hardy-Weinberg questions yesterday on Step 1, so you have to use algebra. I had a couple other math problems as well.

I took algebra in the 7th grade.

This thread is about calculus.

do you really feel panicked? why? i know it can be easy to loose perspective during the premed years, but one C in a class that doesn't even really related to medicine won't keep you out if the rest of your application is strong.

i got C's in gen chem I and a biology seminar (parasitology). didn't even get mentioned during the interview.

You said that there was no math in medical school. That is not true. That's all I was saying. If you don't define math as including simple addition and subtraction, that's fine, but you're wrong. I was simply pointing out that math is part of medical school.

Oh, and all of us took algebra in middle school. Big deal.

The only math that is in medical school is the kind learned in middle school.

That doesn't count.

Are you a math major or something? You seem pretty defensive and protective of your precious math.

Nope, chemistry.

But again, if you want to say algebra isn't math, then you're wrong.

You're annoying.

The kind of math in medical school is the kind you learn in middle school.

The meaning of this statement is indicating that you don't need to worry about any math courses in college, which is the purpose of this thread.

Go do some math problems.

I'm going to go have a beer.

Look, you can get your feathers ruffled if you wish. You made a statement, I disagreed. You said there was no math, I said there was. Then you said that addition, subtraction and algebra isn't math. I said that wasn't true, and it isn't. Big deal. You keep arguing with me to say that it doesn't count because it's easy math. I didn't say it was hard math...I never said anything like that. I thought Calculus was easy. But at any rate, there is math in medical school, it is easy math, nothing to worry about, but there is math.

I couldn't care less if you think I'm annoying. I think you're pretentious. Do you care? No.

There's still no math in medical school.

Simple arithmetic isn't real math. Calculus is real math.

Wow are you just sitting waiting for me to respond to your posts so you can write me back? I edited my message and you had written me back already.

I'm not going to keep arguing about this...maybe there's no math at your medical school. But there has been and will be math at mine.

Either way, you don't need any real math on the boards. You can also do well in all your classes without understanding real math either.

I started to reply about this, and to discuss why you are so pretentious about math, but I was suddenly struck with what a colossal waste of time that would be.

Good night.

You are a wise person. I think someone once said "Never argue with a fool. He'll only drag you down to his level and beat you with experience." 😉

I would put OSUdoc08 on my tosmackinthefacewithaplasticbat list, although after reading his replies (along with DropKickMurpy) in multiple threads and on several topics, I think his signature is actually honest. After his fourth reply in a given thread, he just becomes funny -- and not in a "you can't hurt me anymore!" way -- but an actual funny...Point and laugh funny. Pay to see him act funny, funny.

SDN needs funny people.

People on here are too serious. We need more sarcasm and humor.

Yes; without calculus you cannot become a doctor. You will need to integrate calculus into every diagnosis and procedure that you perform, everyday as a physician. 😀

I got a A in Calc 1 but a C in Calc 2. I'm still applying. 🙂

Calc 2 isn't required for med school. That'll teach you for taking it.

Either way, I bet you would have been accepted somewhere if you applied to enough places.

I was stupid and took Calc 1 through 3! 🙁 And the grades weren't all A's 🙁

Did you take them for fun?

Don't mind OSU doc, he has some hatred for math after he had to take calc I like three times.

Getting a C in calc will hurt you like a C in other premed classes. It will hurt you more if you wanted to do the md/phd route because that could end up being more quantitative. It doesn't put you out of the running. But, you can manage in med school, residency, practice even after you've forgotten all your calculus.

That doesn't mean taking calculus isn't worthwhile, you'll never understand how an MRI machine really works without it, for example. Here's some food for thought

Although calculus can be helpful, it is not essential, and will not actually be used in medical school.

P.S. I've never retaken a course in my life, and that includes calculus.

I took Calc 2. Even though I got a C, I learned not to be a egotitical maniac with any class, even classes i think will be a breeze. So I guess, on a personal level it was worth it....

However, it dropped my gpa down a lot.......ya stupid stupid me.

Hey ...

What about this, since Firebird and OSODoc08 are at it. Let's give them some pies on March 14th to throw at each other.

There is definitely some math in Pie day. 😀

And don't worry about a C in Calculus, you can calculate the dosage for your pt with the PDR.

Wow, so you determine doses by using calculus?

Interesting.

Professor of sarcasm:

Who pissed in your cream of wheat this morning?

I was trying to say a C in Calc. is not the end of the world. Now if the person continues to get C's in everything, that is another story.
