SanDiegoSOD said:This is definitely a pre-allo question; if you know it exists, then why...
Pipacus said:Thank you so much for all of your responses. Given how panicked I feel at the moment, I just wanted to get answers from people that have successfully completed the premed process.

Without it, you have alulus...which doesn't even make any sense.

You don't even use math in medical school.
Firebird said:When I started first year, I thought my days of math were over. But in fact biochemistry, physiology, pharmacology, biostatistics and epidemiology, microbiology, genetics, and the board exam all require basic math and to some degree, algebra. During my MD/PhD year, I had to know how to derive the Michaelis-Menton equation. I even remember someone's notes including some dy/dx business. So saying that you don't use math in medical school is not entirely accurate. But I would say the math aspect is easy, while remembering every single equation is not. Usually cancelling units will get you through the problem 50% of the time.
OSUdoc08 said:You are automatically excluded because you are getting a Ph.D.
You don't need to use any math in medical school. I suppose you can if you want to, but the questions can be solved without it.
I don't count simple arithmetic, as a Down's monkey can do that.
Firebird said:Sorry for the delay in responding, but I was taking Step I. Ugh.
Anyway, I am not doing a PhD anymore. But all those classes I spoke about were regular medical school classes and math was definitely involved. I had two Hardy-Weinberg questions yesterday on Step 1, so you have to use algebra. I had a couple other math problems as well.

This thread is about calculus.
Firebird said:You said that there was no math in medical school. That is not true. That's all I was saying. If you don't define math as including simple addition and subtraction, that's fine, but you're wrong. I was simply pointing out that math is part of medical school.
Oh, and all of us took algebra in middle school. Big deal.
Firebird said:Nope, chemistry.
But again, if you want to say algebra isn't math, then you're wrong.
OSUdoc08 said:You're annoying.
The kind of math in medical school is the kind you learn in middle school.
The meaning of this statement is indicating that you don't need to worry about any math courses in college, which is the purpose of this thread.
Go do some math problems.
I'm going to go have a beer.
Firebird said:Look, you can get your feathers ruffled if you wish. You made a statement, I disagreed. You said there was no math, I said there was. Then you said that addition, subtraction and algebra isn't math. I said that wasn't true, and it isn't. Big deal.
I couldn't care less if you think I'm annoying. I think you're pretentious. Do you care? No.
OSUdoc08 said:There's still no math in medical school.

Firebird said:Wow are you just sitting waiting for me to respond to your posts so you can write me back? I edited my message and you had written me back already.
I'm not going to keep arguing about this...maybe there's no math at your medical school. But there has been and will be math at mine.

After his fourth reply in a given thread, he just becomes funny -- and not in a "you can't hurt me anymore!" way -- but an actual funny...Point and laugh funny. Pay to see him act funny, funny.
SDN needs funny people.

Yes; without calculus you cannot become a doctor. You will need to integrate calculus into every diagnosis and procedure that you perform, everyday as a physician. 😀Pipacus said:i just found out that i got a C in calculus! Are my chances of getting into medschool over?
SeaAngel45 said:I got a A in Calc 1 but a C in Calc 2. I'm still applying. 🙂
-A
Calc 2 isn't required for med school. That'll teach you for taking it.
SeaAngel45 said:If only you were around to tell me that last year. 🙂
I was stupid and took Calc 1 through 3! 🙁 And the grades weren't all A's 🙁OSUdoc08 said:Calc 2 isn't required for med school. That'll teach you for taking it.

seadizzle said:Don't mind OSU doc, he has some hatred for math after he had to take calc I like three times.
Getting a C in calc will hurt you like a C in other premed classes. It will hurt you more if you wanted to do the md/phd route because that could end up being more quantitative. It doesn't put you out of the running. But, you can manage in med school, residency, practice even after you've forgotten all your calculus.
That doesn't mean taking calculus isn't worthwhile, you'll never understand how an MRI machine really works without it, for example. Here's some food for thought

What about this, since Firebird and OSODoc08 are at it. Let's give them some pies on March 14th to throw at each other.
There is definitely some math in Pie day. 😀
And don't worry about a C in Calculus, you can calculate the dosage for your pt with the PDR.
OSUdoc08 said:Wow, so you determine doses by using calculus?
Interesting.
