C in Calculus

Hey,

I may be on my way toward a C in calc I for this semester (spring freshman). I am really beginning to understand it better now but I may have discovered the miracle of online tutorial videos too late. Would pulling a C in calc hurt me too bad? I am an A student otherwise.
I know that calculus has nothing to do with the 2013-14-15 MCATs or have any bearing in med school, but many schools require that I have a semester of calculus. What do ya'll think? Thanks!

Med schools usually won't take anything less than a C, so make sure you don't drop any lower than that. As for hurting you, I really don't think it will matter that much as long as your other grades are good. If it really bothers you, you can retake it. It won't help you much for Allopathic schools, but Osteopathic schools participate in grade replacement. That means if you retake it and get a better grade, DO schools only care about the higher grade. You may have to take the course elsewhere though. Most schools won't allow you to retake anything C or above.

Thanks! I just wanted affirmation that it is not too weighty in regards to how I will appear in admissions. I guess it's not realistic to think everyone has to be really good at math, so I hope they see it that way as well.

It's not gonna hurt you. You're early so find your rhythm and you'll be fine. A "C" doesn't mean trouble. You don't want a bunch of them of course. True, Med schools don't like to see lower than a C but it's not impossible...it would just add more time and work to getting to your goals and, speaking from experience, don't go that route 🙂 Good Luck!

I'm glad this is my last math class. Stats will be fun, I know and I'm taking algebra based physics, so I do not plan on getting any more Cs.

Lmao, of course they care about C's especially as they're counted in your science GPA which is one of the primary determinants of medical school acceptance. Just don't get another C and you'll be fine: especially in bio chem physics or orgo. If you want to have a high GPA then you'll need to make sure you take steps to avoid this in the future. Of course, as I have learned, the MCAT is way more important than 1-2 classes as it's often said that 1 pt on the MCAT is like .1 of your GPA. Maybe that's what Adrian's trying to get at. So ya, if you have a 36 MCAT a couple C's bringing you down to a 3.5 or 3.6 would probably be looked past but you don't know that until you've taken the MCAT. Also, top schools won't like that either if that's what you're aiming for.

I'm looking at Mercer because it is so close to home, so, yeah. Maybe 1 C is not so bad.
