I got a C- in Gen Chem I way back in 2007, but was able to move on to Gen Chem II at my school because I ALSO had AP credit (a 3) for Gen Chem I - so on my transcript, the AP credit is counted as the pre-req for Gen Chem II, but I also have an 'extra course taken' in Gen Chem I (which was a C-).

Do I need to re-take Gen Chem I or will my AP credit suffice? I also have AP credit (a 5) for both intro bio courses and stats (a 4), I presume those are acceptable as well? I have B.S. degrees in Biochem and Genetics/Cell Biology, so I took plenty of upper div bio and chem classes after my disastrous pre-reqs.

Some schools don't take C- or lower. Figure out if the schools you're interested will.. Or just retake it to be safe.

I know schools take AP credits, but do they accept it over a deficient pre-req grade? I guess I should email schools and find out, but I'm casting a really broad net and am applying to many places next year, so I was wondering if anyone has any insight into my situation.

I am enrolled in an SMP type program through May and am applying in June for 2014, and I want my application to be complete and in as early as possible, so I don't want to have to push back submitting if I need to take a summer course or something. Is there an online Gen Chem 1 that's acceptable, should I need to take it?

I don't think so. The retake policy is "most recent grade counts" and I assume it's the same in regard to AP classes.

Alright, CCOM and OSU-COM said that 'as long as the AP credit is equivalent to a C on your transcript' (it is) and 'C- is an acceptable grade', respectively, while PNWU said that:

This is a little hard for us to answer without seeing your AACOMAS application to see how things were applied, etc. Sometimes AP classes are fine to use in place of as long as they were approved on your transcripts by your Bach [sic] school. However this case is a little different and would need to be reviewed. Once you put in your application and we can view it we could give you a stronger answer to your questions.

So, it looks like I will be ok for at least these schools. I'm also asking PCOM, and two MD schools (UW and LSU) for more input. Does anyone have any more input re: a C- in a pre-req while also having AP credit for that pre-req?

CCOM was much nicer to you than they were to me!

Depends on your overall application. How's GPA, how's the mcat, how're your EC's? If you've been rocking the past few years in grades, it probably wouldn't matter.

But I would check with the schools.

I was under the impression that pre-req requirements were relatively inflexible, regardless of the rest of your app. In any case, my app is not that strong: very low uGPA, 4.0 SMP GPA (so far), MCAT in January (practice tests ~32-36 so far), ok ECs (4 year college athlete, some clinical volunteering/shadowing/volunteering/research)

LSU got back to me and also said that it wouldn't be a problem, if anyone else is wondering.

Yea that's the feeling I got about prereqs at DO schools to.. every MD school said they will consider your application even if some of your prereqs suck. I guess the DO process is holistic only if you don't have a C-.
