hey guys,
im taking a wintersession course of sociology 101 but im not doing well in it. I got an 88 on the first test and failed this last one because I didnt study due to my pneumonia and not having all the notes. if i ace the final i can get a B but realistically ill have a C. Currently my cum gpa is 3.36. should I worry about this sociology class or not. I believe I can bring the gpa back up with physics and organic...I just dont want to retake a social science. what do you think?

Thanks,
ulrichsk8ter.

I wouldn't retake a C in a social science. Do you ask if you should worry about the class in the sense that you plan on forgetting about it and just plan on getting the C or what? I would try to rock the final.

I ask if i should worry about getting the C in it. Some people in the class are organizing a study group so I can try to rock the final. even if i get a C i should be okay because DO schools dont factor it.

Don't retake it if you get a C ... no one is going to care about sociology. In fact, I'd be willing to bet that the worse case scenario is that someone asks you in an interview because they want to hear the story more than anything. No offense to any Sociology lovers out there, but at my school (and just about all the ones my friends attended), Sociology classes/majors, etc were considered extremely easy/what people who screwed around for the first 2 years ended up selecting.

I agree they are easy classes, that's why I think it looks bad to get a C when like 2 study groups should be enough to rock the final.

beckhunter116,

Do the best you can to try to rock the final. If you do well, it'll help with increasing your GPA. Just make sure you do well on your MCAT and you'll be fine. I got a C in physics: electricity and magnetism; but got a 10 in MCAT physics.

To the OP, I don't know what University you attend but do yourself a favor and don't bank on raising your GPA through O-chem.

Amen. That was my major! I loved it because class was just a lot of fun. Despite an easy major, it is still possible to get accepted to medical school! (umm, certainly not the whole story- did lots of research and adv science etc)

Do well on the final, try to get a B! Something else to consider is that Sociology professors tend to be VERY understanding of their student's circumstances. I would bet $$$ that if you talked to the prof and explained your circumstances, that you were sick and a C in this class would raise flags on your med school application (just say it will even though adcoms might think it an amusing story than anything else, it is one less amusing story you have to worry about telling and lowering your gpa)....

😉Ask if you could write a short supplemental paper relevant to the scope of the class that would bump your grade up and compensate for the low grade. Especially if it covers the material on the low test.

It;s just not the same ball game as your core science courses. Most Sociology teachers are just wanting their students to enjoy the course and get a bit of a different perspective on social dynamics and yes, put some effort in. Offer to put the effort in to get the grade you want. He/She may even give you a few days after the final to produce a paper (yes, I had this option one semester when I was taking calculus, chem and physics)

Let us know what happens!

I'm not the OP...

don't retake it. if you're losing sleep over it, take a higher level course in the same field, e.g. if it's SOCL201 take SOCL315, and get at least a B. that's going to impress an AdCom much more than re-taking a course you already took (and passed) and getting an "A+" - they'll know you're seeing the material twice. i got a "C" in orgo II and made the decision not to retake it, and slept better than if i had wasted another semester on it (yes, i got into a school during my first application cycle - so you can, too).

if you can stomach the anxiety, and you don't want to risk further punishing that GPA with a tougher course in a subject you don't enjoy (it's on the cusp if you get that C), just be prepared to get a funny look during your interview, or explain it away in any essays you get a chance to write in your application.

good luck!

Wow I haven't been on sdn in a long time! I got a c+ in sociology and was able to bring my gpa back up through some anatomy and physiology classes. Well I also took in the winter session I'm sure I could have got a A but my professor was a columbia graduate and he was teaching in the cc where I'm studying at just for the money. How he might make so much money is probably what your all thinking. He publicated a book actually we needed two for the class and it was mandatory you gt those two books. I guess he made a huge profit off those books, I also think he's the dean of the sociology program. You can make up for that grade by doing better in your other classes. Everyone messes up, I wouldn't recommend retaking the class I feel you should retake a science class if you received a C in that. Just my two cents

LOL...this must be a common technique taught in sociology grad programs. My Sociology teacher wrote the required book and workbook, and he also wrote a workbook for the Marriage and Family class I took a few semesters later.

What a great technique to make money!! He looked really happy when I seen him in his clk Benz. He did mention on the last day of class he had no problems paying for his kids tution, to think of it now the guy bragged a lot and I should have got atleast a B for the class!! Gosh darn it

I think u have a great reason behind why u did so poorly, so if asked, you'll have a good answer. But, what I would do, is just talk to the professor, explain the situation and see if he/she can offer u some extra credit or some way to make it up. Offer to prove to him/her that u can do it if u were not sick by acing the final. If not, I mean, I don't think u'll get rejected just because of a C. But if u really don't feel comfortable applying with a C, then take it again at a JC or online somewhere and it'll replace ur grade.
