Alright so I am in the military and had a rather crazy week and missed class last week. It turns out it was probably the worst week to miss as 16% of total points were earned(or not in my case). I tried to explain to the instructor the situation but she has no mercy. I had a 93 before so the best grade I can earn will be a C, my question is...should I take the C or purposely sabotage my grade down to a D which will make me eligible to retake the course? BTW this is a community college, not sure if that makes a difference to how my grade is averaged when applying to med school.

Any insight would be greatly appreciated, and thanks in advance for your time.

That sucks 🙁

No matter what you do, if you wind up re-taking a class, AMCAS will average your new grade with your old grade. So if you got a D this time and then re-took and got an A, you'd effectively still only have a C+/B-. So in my mind, the difference isn't great enough to warrant intentionally sabotaging. Just take the C and move on.

What class is this? Did you miss a test or something? So your best grade Right now if the class was over today would be a 77% (since you had a 93 and gave up 16%). Can't you kill the final and wind up with a B or so? Is this class curved?

I'd say that 'sabotaging' would be a bad way to go. If this is some random class, you should do as well as you possibly can and put it behind you.

Its a "health education" class that was transferable to my undergrad school of choice. It is almost completely worthless but I thought it would have been interesting at least. As far as the final it is not weighted like that. There are five exams each worth 100 points. I did well on the first three before this one but it wont matter how well I do on the last one, unless she offers me more work I will end up with a C.

Lots of people get into med school with a small number of below B grades.

I would take the C and forget about it. If you are planning to transfer schools anyway, the amount of scrutiny that adcoms will give to one C in some random class early in your college career is quite small.

I'm not sure about how your military duty interfered with your studies, but I'm pretty sure that if you were obeying your military duties, they are legally required to make accommodations for you in the same way every building needs to have handicapped access.

Yes, they are legally required to make some degree of accomodation. Get a letter from your commander stating you were ordered to do whatever this week, and respectfully return to your professor.

If the professor won't play ball, go higher up. No reason you should lose 16% of your points over some b.s. participation grade.

I've been in this situation 3 times, and I was able to make the professors in question play ball eventually.

WOw thats doo doo!! im sorry to hear that brother!

NO, do not get a bad grade on purpose, if you get a 'C' simply wash your hands and keep looking forward.
Like someone already said in this forum, it will be the average of two grades ( at least for allo schools) because of your reasoning for getting them, make sure you explain it in your personal statement when applying.
To make up for the grade, take an upper level science course as soon as you can safely fit it into your schedule to prove that you CAN handle the work.

No matter what do not get less than a C,
If you can take a W then do that, but getting less than a C would be way more detrimental to your cause than beneficial.

Thanks for everyone's responses. I have been told in the past that unless I recieve orders( tdy) they won't do anything and that "just because I am in the military does not exempt me from the standard applied to everyone else," and I suppose that it shouldn't. So I suppose I will just have to swallow the C, it just sucks because the class was a cakewalk.

Just take the C. Getting lower would be bad in summation. I feel for your, the prof needs to be smacked for doing that to you.
