The given answer is (D). Is there a purpose for the energy meter in this setup, other than testing the photoelectric effect on a subsequent question?

I initially thought that the energy meter might read Em (laser pulse energy), but I guess we could get that from the laser itself.
 
Well if allyour energy went into breaking the chemical bonds, there will be none leftover togo to the detector
