I read that UCSF require applicants to complete all prereq classes with a C or better. I have a couple of prereq classes with a C-, do I really have to retake these classes? Has anyone ever got accepted with a C- on their prereq class? 😕

I don't remember if that was ever stated, but the minimum GPA has gone up for the entering class of 2005, so the minimum cumulative GPA should be above 2.8. Depending on how many courses you had that were a C or lower, and if you can write perhaps about why the grade turned out that way in one of your essay questions (there is a section that lets you do this,) that would be a good idea. In other words, if the C was in physics lab and you were working 40 hours a week and commuting and voluteering and studying at the same time, it would suffice it to say that getting an A would have been pretty difficult, so you could mention that as part of your essay.

New Minimum GPA: 2.80
Effective with the fall 2005 admissions cycle, eligible applicants must have a minimum, cumulative undergraduate GPA of 2.80 as calculated by PharmCAS

Frequently Asked Questions About Minimum Eligibility Requirements
Should I still apply if my grade point average is just above the minimum of 2.80?
Admission is competitive and our evaluation is based on all aspects of the application in addition to your grade point average. This includes your science grades, curriculum, recommendations, essays, and interview results. Competition also varies from year to year depending upon the size and strength of the applicant pool. You should consider all of these factors and should not base your decision to apply solely on your GPA.

Thanks Apteka. 😀

I was working 2 jobs at the time and was having lots of roommate problems. Do you think I should mention the roommate problems in my essay? I don't want them to think that I couldn't deal with interpersonal problems.

My GPA does meet the minimum requirement. Currently I have 4 prereq classes that I've never taken, so am not sure if I want to waste time taking the class with a C-. I guess I only thing I can gain from retaking that class is a GPA boost but classes at CCSF are extremely hard to get into so I don't want to attend every class to try and add if retaking is not necessary. 🙄

I think that mentioning having to juggle 2 jobs and having to deal with roommates is totally OK, though I would be cautious in describing the roommate issue, of course. Though can mention it, I would emphasize how living in the bay area almost always (financially) necessitates housemates and how it can be a challenge to live with so many people, especially if their goals are different than yours. (I lived above a few 'musicians' for a few years in the Mission and pulled my hair out every time i tried to study at home. Eventually I stopped. Well, eventually I stopped studying at home, sadly.)

I'm not sure if you already have a pharmacy background in what you do, but if not, I would try to supplement my background with volunteering or doing something pharmacy-related to stress your dedication and interest in the field, and maybe consider taking some courses at SFSU (if possible) though open univeristy (extension) if that is a financial possibility. CCSF does offer some great courses, but SFSU is also a good choice.

Retaking courses is not a bad idea, but I would hold off and see how I do on the other science prereqs- it depends on what the C-s were in- if they were both in physics, I'd tend to brush it off perhaps, but if they were both in Ochem or GenChem, I might be more serious about taking them again... I totally understand you on not wanting to take the courses again at CCSF. I almost had to take the ENTIRE 2nd half of Ochem again at CCSF (with lecture AND lab) since SFSU wouldn't let me take Ochem Lab (they were restricting enrollment towards seniors at the time) so I ended up taking the Ochem lab portion at Skyline college in San Bruno. What a schlep!

PM me if you have any other ?s, kay?
Good luck, are you going to Pharmacy Day on campus later this month?

I know you def need C's for pre-req's. One of my friends made a C- in O.Chem and had to retake it; however, it may depend on the school you are applying to.

My question is, does anyone know if C-'s are acceptable for electives for a particular major going toward a degree, or does it depend on the school? Of course, my school had to change the grading system to +/- during my last year of undergrad. 🙄

I am just getting so sick of studying for this last final! I've had senioritis all sem, and I feel like i'm done. But I have to gut this one out til the end of this week. :scared:

How does Pharmcas calculate grades? Many schools don't have the + or - portion with respect to a grade....so a C-, C, or C+ are all calculated as a 2.0.

What does pharmcas do?

Just look at the pharmcas website.

Has anyone gotten into any CA Pharm. schools who had a C- in a prerequisite?

Did you have to retake the course as a condition of acceptance?

I did. I got a C- in General Bio 2 (BILD 2). I took that class twice. First time around I got a W and then a C-. I really wanted to retake it but I didn't have time to take it before my applications. So I ended up just explaining why I got the C-.

What is up with the word, "senioritis?" It's not accurate terminology, don't tell me people are feeling inflamation from being a college senior. It should really be called "Senior Syndrone," or something.

It was a commonly used term in high school- maybe it's a CA thing?
