Hey guys,

I was wondering if anyone has an idea of what the average number of c-sections a FP must do during residency such that they are allowed to do it once they are attendings. I know the required number actually varies from hiring hospital to hiring hospital; but I was looking for a rough ballpark number above which one would not need to worry about the need to pursue an OB fellowship after residency completion when hunting for FP/with OB jobs.

In todays market, I suspect it will be hard finding hospitals that routinely credential an FP to perform C-sections. Are there some small rural places in which it occurs? Probably. But, I suspect it would really be hard to move into just any community and get credentialed/privileges to start scheduling some sections....

This is a complicated question. It would be very difficult to determine an "average". I've heard of numbers as low as twenty and as high as two hundred and fifty. I no longer catch babies (never did sections) and I'm really not sure. It would be a good idea to ask a couple of OB fellowships. There is such variability that an average doesn't really matter anyway. For example, I currently scope at two different hospitals. The first wanted documentation of 140 colons, the second required 25.

I can however attest that there is a job market for FP's with section experience. I discussed postions with several different groups (admittedly all rural) that wanted me to do OB during my last job search. Section experience was preferred in all of them. All were within two hours of a metropolitan area. Don't forget to think about call coverage.

in the Colorado Front Range, there are suburban and smaller city hospitals credentialing FPs for C/S. Numbers range from 40 to 75 or more.
