Just wondering if anyone has any opinions on psych programs in CA. Which ones are more reputable than others, as well as areas that each program focuses on. Also, how hard is it to match if you are out of state?

From my experience last year, it seems that NPI and Stanford are the hardest to get an interview. I got interviews from UCSF, UCSD, but not the above two. I think if u want a name-brand that will help your future, NPI, Stanford, UCSF, UCSD are more reputable. All of them take out of state for sure, don't worry. In fact, I think 2-3 programs would be happy to get out of state than out of country.....

So maybe UCSF/Stanford/NPI/UCSD, then UCI/SFV/UCD/Harbor, then Cedars/Loma Linda, then maybe Fresno/Cal Pacific/..... I didn't go to San Mateo, so I don't know about that one.... the programs I didn't mention I did not like for several reason (too much work, residents were not happy when I went to interview, many other reasons). Good luck.

Do you know if it's absolutely necessary to do an away elective if you are planning on applying to ca programs?

Yes and no. I think strong rec from nationally known faculty is the key. Of course, good step 1/2 scores won't hurt. So, doing away elective to get a key faculty support is also the key... i won't say away elective is too important
