am thinking of applying to the CA psychiatry residencies, currently a M3 at University of Arizona. Trying to look for more info when I visit some of these programs, but which ones would you recommend I apply to?

Los Angeles County-Harbor-UCLA Medical Center Program

Stanford University Program

San Mateo County Behavioral Health and Recovery Services Program

University of Southern California/LAC+USC Medical Center Program

UCLA-San Fernando Valley/VA Greater Los Angeles Program

UCLA Medical Center Program

UCLA-Kern Medical Center Program

University of California (San Diego) Program

University of California (San Francisco) Program

California Pacific Medical Center Program

University of California (Irvine) Program

sorry for the long list but any advice would be appreciated, should I also apply to AZ/NV residencies as well (I would like to settle in CA)

Impossible to guess what you should do. What should I do about my desire to play a live show in New Orleans with the original Meters? See.....so, not that far fetched, but yeah, definitely apply to more than just Cali schools unless you're a stud. And have the Ca-jones to roll the dice.

Use the search function. Think about location. You ever been to Bakersfield? It's a trailer theme park bonanza. Only real--and stank as it gets. It's a lateral move from Kabul.

All the others are legit good to great places--which means whatever that means to whomever it does.

I'm starting to actually like your question style. It inspires a certain vague, circular self-amusement.

Good luck. Apply to all of them, what the heck. You gave us nothing else to tell you otherwise. There are reviews of these programs in this site's archives. Not as easily obtainable as Rotten Tomatoes or something. But at least there for you to pass through your own very unique filter. As we all must do for ourselves when applying.

Don't forget to factor in cost of living at all these different cities. Do you have a lot of debt? Spouse and kids to support? Someone just posted recently about how expensive the Bay Area is and how it would be hard to live there esp if you have a family to support.

my apologies for being vague this is my first time here, I am just trying to cut down the list as much as possible. I have no family to support other than my aging parents. I have heard the San Mateo is the best of out all of them but it is difficult to get. Are there any residencies that I should remove unless I have a good Step 1 score and good grades and LORs (also thinking of doing an extern at one of these places).

in the search function, should I type in CA psychiatry residencies for better results?

After you do your preliminary research, if you still have questions about what programs to add or remove from your list, you need to provide some information in order for people to help you.

Unlike applying to medical school, you really need to have a better idea of what you're looking for in a psychiatry residency. You have done some of that by deciding on a geographic preference, but that's only the first step.

What kind of career are you hoping for? Academic? Community psychiatry? Private practice? What are your interests within psychiatry? Are you interested in particular types of psychotherapy? Are there certain populations you are interested in working with? Do you want a large academic program with lots of research going on? Do you want a program with a smaller, more one-on-one feel? Do you want an intense training experience, or are you interested in a program that will give you more time to pursue outside interests?

There is not a "best program in CA." San Mateo has its pros and cons, and may be the best program for you depending on your interests and preferences. Based on your two posts it's impossible for anyone to advise you because you haven't provided any information about your preferences to give any kind of advice.

Just to complicate things, don't forget,

Loma Linda University Program

University of California (Davis) Health System Program

UCSF Fresno

Kaweah Delta Health Care District (new)

Kaiser Fontana (new)

With so many places, something is going to fit.

Hey MS3 OP: Why not U of A, Maricopa, or Banner Health? Its inexpensive to live in AZ and the traffic is nothing compared to LA, SF, and SD. Less headache and expense while you are doing your residency/fellowship, and then when you can make real $$$ then you can move to the expensive west coast.

I have heard the San Mateo is the best of out all of them but it is difficult to get.
San Mateo is definitely the best for a certain type of applicant. It's not a great program for other applicants. And this is pretty much true for all programs.
Are there any residencies that I should remove unless I have a good Step 1 score and good grades and LORs (also thinking of doing an extern at one of these places).
Coastal California residencies are more competitive than most due to geography. UCSF and UCLA-Semel are two of the most competitive programs in the country. If you're dying to go to California and have substandard Steps, grades, and LORs, look inland. Kaweah Delta and Kaiser Fontana are likely to be among the least competitive due to newness and geography. UCSF Fresno, UCLA SFV, UCLA Kern, and LLU are also on the less competitive end of things.

Do a smart search on individual program names for residency reviews and information about each. Once you've done so and gotten an idea of which programs look interesting to you, you can shorten the list by quite a lot to figure out which programs appeal to you. Folks who would LOVE San Mateo would not love UCSF, even though they're near each other. Programs have different patient demographics, emphasis, call schedule, etc. You need to do some navel gazing, some program gazing, then you can come back with some good questions.
