Anyone here attending? I already visited both campus' but want to go again to get a more indept view of what life would be like there. OTHER THAN the beach(SLO):hardy: and the traffic(Pomona)!😡

hey! im a peer advisor and i was an ag ambassador at cal poly pomona. you can totally get a more in-depth tour (just about AG) any time you want!! i never visited slo but i really like pomona. 🙂

and im not sure how big the slo classes are...but at pomona the max i've seen in an animal science class is around 50 people.

that was a plus for me. 🙂

I also went to Pomona, and while I didn't like the geographic location much (although some really cool places are only a short drive away), the education and experience was outstanding. I don't know much about SLO but the motto at Pomona is learn by doing and you really do a lot! In the short time I was there I learned how to tail dock, castrate and vaccinate lambs (not sure if they still do that), electroejaculate bulls, rams, boars and stallions and evaluate semen, prepare equine feed rations, perform various biotech procedures such as PCR, ELISA and immunofluorescence, and the specimens provided for gross anatomy and repro were amazing! There are other opportunities available through various clubs and programs as well, such as living on the farm where you can board for "free" in exchange for work, and several cool wetlabs. The faculty in the ag department are wonderful as well. They were all concerned with how students were learning and always willing to help. I just wanted to give my 2 cents so good luck in your decision! :luck:

Yes I do not like the location either. I have lived all my life in the central valley so LA is a HUGE adjustment for me. (As I come over the Grape Vine and see the sky my lungs start to hurt) I have heard of that program where you can live on the farm. Thats what really sparked my interest in Pomona. I have spoken to one person who did that and graduated from Pomona. His opinion of the program was not good but I think he's just lazy. I'm interested in learning more about the program and hear from students who have actually done it. Hopefully see where students work and live too. The faculty sound great. Since I started looking into the school I have never hearc a bad thing about them! I only hear good things about the people and the program.

Where can I make an appointment for an "ag" tour. I have sent emails but haven't gotten a response. I'm sure this is a really busy time for everyone with the school year just starting but I want to go before I get too loaded down with homework and tests.

I also want to go look at apartments and neighborhoods around the school but don't know where to go.

Ditto 🙂 I loved CPP!

ok, so you can contact rhonda... [email protected]

and living on campus while working...i've had several friends who did that. the experience is awesome...but its A LOT of work. you take care of all the animals plus lay down irrigation lines. i can get you someones contact info that lived at the units and they can tell you about their experiences.

living at the horse unit i heard was fun. it's hard to get into that your first year, but if you make friends with the people that already live there...then they can fight to get you in.

i think best thing would try to live in the dorms...but i heard that after the second day online registration was open---it got full. so you have to sign up asap.

places to live: walnut, diamond bar, and chino hills are really nice areas. walnut is expensive but around 5-10 min away. diamond bar is a little further 10-15 min. and chino hills is around 25 min away. i live in chino hills. go to rent.com and see what apartments are available.

OH, if you're a transfer student you have the option to live at the university suites (i say it's like hotel-style living) and then there's the university village which are little apartments.

AND everything that QTKITTY said is totally true...i got to do all that hands-on stuff. there's even more stuff to learn if you get involved at the animal units.

i did foal watch where i took care of a pregnant horse, and when she was giving birth i was allowed INSIDE the stall. i saw the baby come out, take its first steps, lead it to nurse, NAMED IT (i named her sprinkles) and then we got the uterus and filled it with water to see if everything came out.

we have a cow on campus named Plug that has a plug in her side and you can stick your arm straight into her rumen!

and about traveling to cool locations....the beach, disneyland, mexico, skiing, hollywood....all that stuff is 1-2 hrs away. well, i guess mexico might be a little farther(maybe 3 hrs). lol.

Thanks for all the great info and contact information. I would love to talk to someone who has lived at the units.
I can't wait to go and visit the ag part of campus. Hopefully I can find a day in my schedule SOON!

I did not live at the units, but I did live in the dorms for 3 years...

Everything everyone has said so far about Cal Poly Pomona is absolutely true.

It's so funny,... I was talking to people at Western (some friends in the Pharm. program) and they were like, "Man our Vet Med students are crazy @ Western. I just talked to someone who's a fourth year and she castrated pigs the other day, with no anesthetic!"
I'm like, "Dude,... I did that at CalPoly in my first quarter. On Campus. Whatev.,..." I thought it was pretty funny. 😀
The Western students are coming over to our animal units ALL THE TIME, and I think it's also funny that a)They have to come to our school to do their hands-on stuff, and b) Usually they're just watching us do stuff. I have yet to see them actually touch any of our animals. At the same time, I'm not trying to knock Western at ALL, and I think they have a great program. I just don't think they have any business rejecting any CPP student from their school. 😀

Pomona is also a relatively small school, and Ag. is a small college, so it's really easy to get involved and get to know people in your classes. I'm coming into my third year now, and I never have a class where I don't know at least one person, even if it's a GE. And I've been involved in at least three clubs, I'm a member of a sorority, and I've been elected to student government. And, I'm a transfer student,... so you can make fast friends. 😛

You really need to stay quiet when you do not know what the beep you are talking about. Yes CPP is a great school (I absolutely loved it there). It is the FIRST year Western students that "watch" you (before they get the chance to do themseves). Have you ever stopped to think they did not do things when you are there out of respect for your education? Trust me we did tons in first and second year when the CPP students are not there. Guess who bought your nice new squeeze shoute system??? Western. So don't try to act like Western owes you anything. Trust me as one who was taught at CPP with the old rusty equipment, your life is much better as a student since Western is now there. So get off your high horse.🙄

How did you like it? What is the situation with sharing rooms etc.?

I lived in a double (one room mate). It is small, but you get used to it. If you are really introverted, you may not like dorm living. I absolutely loved it. Also how well you get along with your roomie has tons to do with how happy you are (which really is chance, I do NOT recommend rooming with a friend you already know). It was nice living on campus, having others around to study or go out with. The food does kinda suck though that may be improved now but I was always eating salad bar and sandwiches.

Whoa... c a l m d o w n. I said in my earlier post, I was NOT trying to knock Western at all.
I was just trying to point out that at CPP we get to do a lot of hands-on stuff that some people don't even get to see until they're in vet school, which I think says a lot about our program.
As far as the squeeze chute, if you're talking about the hydraulic one (since it's the nicest) I was not told that Western had footed the bill.

Yes the hydraulic Western footed the bill (yellow in color if I remember correctly). Read your post carefully...it comes off as "this is funny about Western....(insert comments here)...but I am NOT trying to put them down"... Well if you present the part you said, and neglect to mention that the Western students are FIRST and not FOURTH year students watching the CPP AVS students, it sounds like you are saying "I get more hands on than the vet school" My point was to point out that the Western students must watch before they do anything (part of the school philosophy) and Western values the CPP AVS educational experiences and would not bring in their students at the same time youall are working for the vet students to get in your way. They do their hands on when the AVS CPP students are not in lab.😉
