does this mean that all cal states will be DPT fall 2011 or fall 2012? If we applied in this cycle to cal states does that mean we will be starting their new DPT program in fall 2011 or we would have to wait till the next cycle next yr and the DPT program will start fall 2012?

I heard it's also going to make getting a PT degree there that much more expensive.

It will take a few years to transition from a MPT to a DPT program. They have to basically re-write the curriculum, get it approved & accredited, and then implement it. I don't think we'll see the first Cal State DPTs graduate until about 2013 or 2014 at best. But still GREAT news for the profession (and for the CSU system in general as they would have otherwise been forced to close the PT departments due to non-accreditation by the APTA). And even though the overall cost of a PT degree will increase, the CSU system will still offer a very affordable option (at less than ~5k/semester) for students pursuing a PT degree (like me!!).

Finally, the Governator is doing something beneficial for the education system in CA amidst all the crazy budget cuts to schools!

I was looking forward to applying to those schools this application cycle too because they are going to offer doctorate degree...Guess since it's going to take a few years, I'm not gonna apply to them. Thanks for the reply.

Currently in the field, there is no difference in pay for MPTs vs. DPTs. If cost is an issue for you, I would still recommend the CSUs, as they cannot be beat in price, and you get a great education too!! I cannot speak for the other CSUs, but at CSU Sacramento, we have an agreement with AT Still University for priority admission for their transitional DPT program (all online), which costs less than 10k for the entire program. Add this to the already cheap price of the MPT, and you're still significantly cheaper than a private university anywhere in the US, while still coming out with a DPT in the end! Plus you can start working right out of the MPT program as soon as you get your license and start making the PT salary before you transition all the way to the DPT. Just my two cents. 👍
