Hey guys, I have previously posted this on the Premed (MD) board and I want to know if the same thing applies to DO schools. I currently go to a Cal State University and I am entering my 3rd year as a bio major with a gpa of 3.48. I have aced all of my bio classes but got a B in my first gchem course. However, I am much more focused and determined to work hard and boost up my gpa. My question is does attending a Cal state hinder my chances of getting into med school. On the MD boards they suggested that I transfer to a UC but by the time I transfer to a UC I would be in my fourth year so it would be a little too late. What would be the most advisable thing to do in my situation to get into a DO medical school. Any suggestions would be appreciated thank you.

I'm coming from CSUS and applying to DO schools this cycle, I'll tell you how it goes 🙂 feel free to PM me!

I met a LECOM student who went to CSUF, so it's possible.

I found the statement in bald to be funny. If canadian students are gaining admission to DO schools, what makes you think that it's only possible for CSU grads to get accepted?

I recently met with a premed advisor at a CSU, who sets on an admission committee of UCI medical school, and was shown some interesting stats. 86% of medical school applicants who attend that University have gotten at least one acceptance at a medical school.

I believe that one can receive better quality education at a CSU than at a UC. Plus, research opportunities are more obtainable at CSUs.

Finally, maintaining a good gpa and scoring well on the mcat is far more important than the name of your undergrad school.

That makes me feel a little better 😀

I don't have anything against CSU's, but I have a very hard time believing that. UC's are much more research focused than CSU's, and pretty much anybody can get into a research lab at UCI if they want.

REPRESENTING CENTRAL CALIFORNIA....

I KNOW MANY FRESNO STATE STUDENTS AT DO, MD and International/Caribbean Med Schools

Possible, of course! Harder, yes. I went to UCSD for undergrad and attended many programs put on by the pre-health clubs that had actual admission board members speak to students about getting into medical.

They said that schools often quantify your undergrad work with an equation that considers MCAT, GPA, and a coefficient for quality of undergraduate institution.

If you're coming from a low tier school, such as a cal state, the curves in the classes will be much lower and it will be easier to get better grades. Therefor, your high GPA doesn't mean as much as a high GPA from a competitive institution. This was their philosophy, directly from their mouths.

Ultimately, if you get great grades and rock the MCAT you should be fine, whether you're from cal state LA or UCLA.
