hey. does anyone know how your science gpa is calculated? i know it includes biology, chemistry, physics, and math courses... but say you repeat a course, do they take an average or does the better grade count? for example.... say i took the following courses and got the following grades

bio... A (4 units) - 4 x 4 = 16
chem... A (4 units) - 4 x 4 = 16
physics... C (4 units) - 4 x 2 = 8 ... retook and got an A - 4 x 4 = 16... so average is a B - 4 x 3 = 12

would my science gpa be a 4.0 or a 3.67? so pretty much does the A replace the C or average out to a B w/ the C in physics? haha hope this makes sense...

Everytime you take a course, it counts in your GPA even if it's a redo of a course. So, to figure out your GPA, just count the 2nd attempt as another class.

if you retake a class AADSAS will count both and make an average. So if you got a C first time and then retook it and got an A, on AADSAS that will be a B average.

i know some schools, like my undergrad UCSB, takes away the bad grade if you retake and do well, but on AADSAS they count both.

hope that helps.

so do the schools look at the AADSAS gpa? or do they recalculate the gpa according to how the institution normally does it? bc my gpa will be significantly higher if the schools look at the replaced grades versus the averaged grades... thanks for your help btw.

you can be certain that the school will average your grades. therefore, they will probably use the AADSAS gpa or a calculation very similar.

the whole point of AADSAS is to provide the dental school a printout of your academic and extracurricular activities.

the schools get a printout of your grades and the AADSAS calculated GPA - that is what they look at.

think about it, the dental schools get a verified GPA of all your science and non-science classes from your undergrad and/or grad school, and you think they have or want to recalculate it? sorry....not going to happen.

ok for those who care... i actually just ended up contacting one of the schools... when i spoke to the admissions advisor, she told me that since their school usually replaces the grade, that's what they'll do w/ the dental school applications. once they receive the applications, if it's been marked that the course has been retaken, they'll cancel out the 1st grade, adn count the 2nd one.. so they'll pretty much recalculate your gpa... but it varies w/ each school.. so contact the schools you're applying to.
