calculator question

i got a TI-84 calculator

it should be good but it says it's for pre-calculus. not to be picky but i have the money for this one

i've been doing everything the old fashion way but need a calculator before going into trigonometry and calculus

Keep your 84. The 89, while obviously offering more features, is unnecessary unless your class requires it (probably not).

I love my 89. But unless you're a math, engineering, or maybe physics/chem major, you won't ever use it to its full potential. In fact, I still haven't used it to its full potential. It's definitely a cheat tool for highschool calculus, which is why calculators can't be used in a lot of classes.

It depends on how much calculus you're taking. If you're taking calculus I you can get by without it.

you don't need 89 unless you're an engineer or mathematician. also, you take precalc in college?

The TI-89 does calculus. Huge advantage when you're stuck on a homework problem. Great investment IMO.

Unless you plan on majoring in engineering in college, a TI-84 will be good enough to get you through college.

Firstly, I know you are saying that in fun 🙂

Secondly, my homework assignments always asked to show full work, so although I could use TI-89 to check answers and/or know the answer before I started the problem, I would have to do the problem out anyway. Me no cheat! 😛

I do know that at the school where I am taking my post-bacc, they just have multiple choice answers for calc exams. A TI-89 would probably be banned from such an exam since it would do your exam for you, so proceed with caution in that case.

In my calculus class, TI-89s were actually banned because you literally had to do nothing to solve a given expression. Ah well. It's an awesome calculator, but it might take some time to learn to use properly and it might not really help you in the long run.

i've had an 83 since the beginning of high school and it's gotten me through diff eqns, linear algebra and multi var calc.

This is mainly why I would want it. When I get a problem wrong I like to know where I went wrong.

The 89 is nice, but not necessary. I've gotten through all my math classes, including Linear, DE, and Multivariable with just my 84. An 89 would have been handy near the end of DE, though, when my professor had a program on hers to do Laplace and Inverse Laplace transforms. Other than that, an 84 is more than good enough.

It is considered a college level math course...I took it last quarter because I got my GED and did not take it in high school, which, I imagine, is why most people take it in college (if they take it).

While we are on the subject..I am going to be taking calc 1 and just got a graphing calculator for Christmas. It is a Casio, and the class suggests a TI-84, or something like that. Do you think this will be a problem? My guess is no, but I only have a small window if I want to return it. Further, the TI-84 is more expensive.

I got through Calc I and II and calc-based Gen Physics I and II with the TI-83 I used in high school for Algebra II, trig/advanced math, and intro to calc without any difficulty.

If you want the TI-89 and you don't mind spending the money, get it, but I don't think it will give you a huge material advantage.

I got through Calc III with a TI-83. Doing the problems by hand is better anyway! It helps your cognitive abilities.

I love my 89 as well, pretty handy for many math classes. But, the 89 is can be tricky at times with syntax (it very different from the 83/84 series) and everything so if you get it be ready to sit down for a few hours and tinker with it as you try to figure everything out.
