In short, I'm not quite sure what I should do, and most of the advisors at my institution have yet to paint a very clear picture, so I'm looking for advice from those who have been in similar situations/know the repercussions and consequences of my actions. I'm a first semester first year at a state university. Prior to switching into biomed about a month and a half ago, I was a computer science major. Quite frankly, I'm not very stellar in mathematics, so problems perhaps began to stem from there. At my institution, Computer Science majors must take up until Calculus II. Bio-med only requires Calculus I. While I'm in a few other math courses (Namely, Discrete Mathematics and a few programming classes, all of which I'm doing decently in), I'm not doing too well at all in Calculus. I was told that I should perhaps finish the class NC, and then take it again next semester. I don't want to utterly destroy any chances I have of getting into medical school during my first semester. Any and all advice on the matter is greatly appreciated. Thank you all for taking the time out of your days to read this, it's much appreciated.

I'm not sure if I exactly understand your situation but if you're going to get any worse than a C in the Calc class I would withdraw and do better next time.

Alright. Any reasoning behind withdrawing over taking an NC?

I might add, the grading scale at my institution for this particular course is ABCF

You're going to be fine. I withdrew from calculus twice, and finished up with a C. Got my first MD acceptance last week. I assume NC means noncredit = audit status? Might not be a bad way to go. That way when you take the class for a grade it won't be new material. If you want to avoid a bad grade then fine, but you should know that getting a C in something like calculus isn't going to torpedo your dreams of going to medical school. It doesn't help, of course, but what really matters is the big picture.

Thank you. Really. This helps. From what I've seen, AMCAS weights an NC as an F (0.0), so I withdrew from the class. I still have a higher levelled math course (which for some reason, I'm doing stellar in...) known as Logic and Proof, so hopefully it doesn't look too horrid to Adcoms. But thank you, really. It's nice to know that others have been in my situation before.

Happy to help 🙂 Goodluck and keep fighting the good fight!
