Hi SDN,

I attend a UC school and so far took 1 quarter of calculus and 1 quarter of statistics. Upon entering college, I waived the first calculus class (limits, derivatives, etc). According to my understanding, most schools require a semester of calculus. As far as I know, a quarter does not equal a semester, so does that mean I have to take the next part of the series of calculus at my school, multivariable calculus? I haven't taken calculus since winter quarter of my freshman year and now I am a senior. I know some schools accept AP schools but a lot of schools don't either. I am deathly afraid of having to take calc again.

My second question is if calculus professors count as science professors (can fulfill science LOR)?

Typically, one quarter DOES = one semester, since the material is just crammed into a shorter amount of time with the pace faster. However, if it's 1 year of, let's say sciences, then that's 3 quarters, NOT 2.

If you have one quarter of calculus and one quarter of statistics, you should be cleared for the med schools with a two semester requirement, especially since many do accept AP credit for math. If you're still doubting, I suggest talking to your academic adviser for the translation.

As for the LOR, it might vary from school to school, but it would be better to play it safe and get a letter from a professor in a science department, rather than the math department.

You're going to have to call individual schools you're interested in applying to that require "a year of math," because I'm in a similar position and got mixed answers from the admissions offices (Both UC Davis and UC Irvine told me I needed to take another quarter of stats or calculus).

Take stats!
