there are a few changes to the pcat test that includes more organic chemistry, a calculus/pre-cal session and a critical thinking essay. how much calculus do you use in pharmacy classes? i haven't taken calculus for almost 4 years now and if there are classes that absolutely require calc im s.o.l.

ugh more orgo chem, and calc questions on pcats? thats not good news for me. By the time i take the pcats ill prolly forget everything i learned in calc

Ouch! Is this true? I haven't taken calculus in ..... about 22 years. And it wasn't my best course then. And I test in October but I don't start OChem until Aug 22?

yes these are real changes. i received the heads up from my admissions counselor. not sure when those changes will be implemented but i get the impression from the e-mail that they will be implemented for those wanting to enter for the 2005 year

We did use some calculus in the p-chem class at UCSF, and I think it also turned up a bit in our stats class. 👎

😱 Has anyone seen any new PCAT study guides that have a Calc section? I guess I better work on that, then. 🙁

Thanks again. I missed that post.

I am now majorly stressing. Not only have I not taken Calc in almost a quarter century, but I will only have taken 2 months of A&P and Ochem when I sit for the PCAT. 🙁

I feel the same way. Haven't taken calc in forever (and didn't even understand it then), will only have 2 months of O-chem and no physiology when I take the PCAT.

I'm also irritated that my Kaplan prep book explicitly said that there would be no calculus on the PCAT. 👎

Well this is such a new change, that no PCAT prep book will be accurate or fully prepare you for the exam. No one has even taken the new version of the PCAT. I would be more irritated at Harcourt, especially with their new scoring system. How is it possible to compare past test takers to new test takers fairly?

Here is an example given on the Quantitative Ability:

1. As an angle increases from 0? to 90?, what
happens to the value of the sine and cosine of
the angle?
A. Both the sine and cosine decrease.
B. Both the sine and cosine increase.
C. The sine increases and the
cosine decreases.
D. The sine decreases and the
cosine increases.

2. ABC is a right triangle, in which ∠A equals 30?
and AB equals the square root of 3. What is the length of AC?
A. 1
B. 2
C. square root of 3
D. 2 * square root of 2

3. If log x = A, then log x2 =
A. 2A
B. A squared
C. A + log 2
D. 2 log A

4. If two similar triangles have bases in the ratio of 2:3,
what is the ratio of their areas?
A. 1:1.67
B. 2:3
C. 4:6
D. 4:9

Yikes, hopefully I won't have to take the PCAT again. I don't remember much of my basic math and trig! :scared: Calculus is more fresh in my brain, but that wasn't the best of my classes either. Gulp.

Just a suggestion you might try if your schedule allows- you can try auditing a calc or pre-calc (pre-calc reviews the trig in more detail than calc) class this way you can get the refresher you need without the stress of having to get a good grade.
