I took a college calculus class through a nearly college offereing a program called SCALE. (this was through CW POST). I am wondering if I should retake calculus? I got around an 85 or so overall in the class. Also do I have to report this grade when I'm applying to medical schools? thanks

Yes, you need to report that grade since you took it at a college.

Well, what major are you? If you're doing engineering or something at a really tough school, you might want to retake it. However, if you are studying something where you don't really need calculus, then I don't see the point of retaking it.

I am a psych major. And I didnt actually take the class at a college. I took it in high school wiht a normal high school teacher. Would I still need to report such a grade? I feel like I really screwed up in this class because I had no work ethic in high school. sighh....

Oh. I thought you took it at a nearby college. In that case, no, you don't report high school grades to med schools. Did you get any AP credit or anything? I don't see why you'd need to retake calc. The only problem you might run into is that some med schools require college math classes, so you'll have to take something to satisfy those credits.

the class satisfies my math requirement because although it wasn't an ap, i did receieve college credit for it.

Just so you're aware I think some med school might not accept math classes taken in highschool as filling their requirement. It might well fill your undergrad's requirement but you need to research or take another class to make sure that you don't end up with out the requirements.

I do agree with the above though that you don't have to report the 85.

If the credit for Calculus is on your college transcript, I doubt you'd have to retake. Of course, you might want to ask an advisor as well.

the dean of the college recvommended that I dont take it but she also said to wait untuil i talk with a premed cousnselor. If I do infact take it, it will probably be my soph or jr year I guess.

Calculus should be a pre-req for admission.

Why?

It is in alot of schools, but:

You don't need to know Calculus in medical school.

Calculus is almost always needed for a bachelor's degree in the sciences, however.

My pre-med advisor told me that more and more Texas med schools are making calculus a requirement.

I agree with OSUdoc08, you don't need calculus in med school. Even though I'm not in med school myself, my aunt is a DR and said she doesn't use calculus for much of anything; I've also talked to current med students and they agree.
