Hey guys im a college freshman taking calculus for the 2nd time and I'm not doing so well in it. Im doing great in my other classes (chem, engl, psych, hist..) but calculus is just not my subject I find it to be hard and challenging. does anyone else feel the same way? last semester I got a NP grade for it and now it seems like i may be headed for that same grade again. So down the road will it look bad if i get 2 NP grades for the same class? and if i do decide to get an NP and then switch over to statistics and that how will the adcom people look at it?

Thanks

PS: If anyone has any good tips and suggestions or anything about the class of calculus i would highly appreciate it. thanks

When you first entered college, did you take the college Maths placement test; if you have done so, then which level were you placed at? Your foundation for pre-calculus is not good; hence when you took calculus, it is going to make you worse. Go and apply for some remedial classes for pre-calculus and trigonometry; if you can do well in these classes, calculus should not be a problem for you.

*from personal experience*🙂

Is an NP like a W?

It won't look that good to have this grade two semesters in a row, unfortunately.

Does anyone know any good websites that teach calculus?

No... NP (non-pass) is less than a C; at some schools a D is NP and at others you have to get an F to be NP. Instead of taking a class for a grade you can ask for pass/non-pass.

The best way to do well in Calculus is to complete all of the exercises in each and every section. Don't just do them once, for hw purposes, but instead keep on repeating them until you've literally memorized the answers. Just remember that "practice makes perfect" and that's all there is to it! Also, google up anything that might confuse you and check out the videos on youtube. Good luck!

There was a post made a couple of days ago of a guy proclaiming his ownage of calculus, just ask him.

that's what i was going to say. if you ask that guy, he'll let you in on the grail of calculus. apparently it is the easiest thing in the world to do...i'm sure he has some secret...either that, or he's just naturally good.

but to the OP, i second the idea of strengthening your algebra and your trigonometry skills. whether you do it formally (take the classes) or on your own... calculus really will become easier for you if you have the foundation skills down. good luck.

Drop out of being a premed now! ...uh actually, I hate math. That is why I never took calc and now can't apply to many super competitive schools. Just wanted to put my two cents in there that you don't actually need calc credit to apply to almost every school in the country.

Math is like learning a foreign language you have to become fluent in it. Unfortunately, like learning a new language the hardest part will be at the very beginning of your studies.

I made A's in Cal I,II,III but the only secret to it is working hard early on, which pays off later. I would do all the assigned work over and over again until its second nature, try to understand what is happening also.

This calculator can help you on whatever you need in calculus if you get stuck. It does all derivatives/integrals + basic differential equations. (And a whole lot more).

Hope this helps!!! good luck.

P.S.

The guy in the cal 2 is hard thread is a *****, don't listen to anything he says. 🙂
