Senator San Aanestad's office informed us today that he has confirmed
that the state's evaluation of the Western Regional Examining Board's
exam has turned out positive.?Last year's SB 1865 (Aanestad), which
provided the option for dental licensure applicants to take the WREB exam
instead of the California clinical exam, required that the Department of
Consumer Affairs' Office of Examination Resources evaluate the WREB exam
to determine if it is clinically equivalent to the state exam.?Senator
Aanestad has been informed that the evaluation is now complete and has
determined that the WREB exam is in fact equivalent.?
While this is certainly good news for potential applicants, it is likely
to be weeks or months before licenses can actually be issued based on
passage of the WREB exam. While the Dental Board has been diligent in
beginning the process of developing the regulations necessary to
implement SB 1865 (and CDA has been actively participating in an effort
to ensure that the application process is as simple as possible), those
regulations could not be formally adopted until this evaluation was
completed. We are in the process of contacting Dr. George SooHoo, chair
of the Board's examination committee, to find out what their next step
will be.The Board's next meeting takes place November 17-18, and we
certainly anticipate that this matter we be on the agenda. The main
question will be whether the Board decides to attempt to adopt the
regulations as emergency regulations, which would allow licenses to be
issued sooner but which first must be justified to the Office of
Administrative Law as a legitimate "emergency."?
We will keep you informed as we learn more in the days ahead.
